Guest eieioNY Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 I got my SP5 this week and have two issues, one quite major, and one smaller but very annoying: (1) screen and keys lock up/freezes when key lock is on, and wifi is turned on, then when the SP5 senses a new wifi connection, the query screen "new wifi detected, do you want to view the ..." pops up. The problem is when you've locked your keys, say for putting the phone in your pocket, and you walk/drive by an area with new wifi connections (VERY frequent occurance in nyc), the phone has a pop up screen and you're FORCED to answer Yes or No before moving on!! well, you can't answer yes or no since the key lock is on! NO BUTTON will work, incl the on/off, the connections botton on the left, NONE. The only way that i know of to get out of this "frozen" situation is to remove the battery and turn the phone on again. this means that whenever you plan to lock your keys, you better turn off your wifi, unless you're planning on locking your keys and being stationary; but if you were planning on being stationary, why would you lock your keys? one typically locks one's keys when one is moving around, when the phone is in your pocket! anyone knows of a workaround? it would be appreciated! (2) the IMate SP5 came with three programs in the Add/Remove Programs listing: the antivirus (AV), Backgammon, and another game called Lines. in no time, like one day, with minimal web surfing and frequent deleting of IE memories, i have like only less than 1MB of "usable memory" left, but quite a bit of Program Memory. I'm only talking about the phone's internal ram here, not my 1gb mini SD. much searching and asking around ensued. no results/answers. the only solution was a "soft reset": start/accessories/clear storage. while i thought that that would reset to "out of the box factory condition", the result was that in Add/Remove programs, there are now NO programs at all! Interestingly, I now have: Storage Memory 17.95MB, Used 12.29MB, Free 5.65MB. MUCH better. i realize that i don't have the AV anymore, but during my second day of having this phone, the alert: low memory pop up was constantly popping up, like every minute!! which was clearly untolerable. So while this is not a great workaround, since i no longer have AV (don't much care about the backgammon and Lines games), it is a workaround of sorts until they start sending out viruses targeted at smartphones. any advice from you all would be most appreciated. i'm at the end of my wits even though i've only had the SP5 for 3 days. i was told that the Qtek 8300/8310 do not have this memory problem. honestly, the key lock/new wifi detected...frozen phone problem is extremely annoying. anyone knows what to do? many thanks in advance!
Guest SeeJ Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 Just got my sp5 today and I love it!! Solution to problem 1 - just tell it to stop notifying you when new networks are present. Haven't encountered problem 2 yet...
Guest kam_ Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 Point 2: Follow the tweak thread and download the tweak to put your IE files on your storage card. Next if all you care about is UK english or US english then use the NRE rom instead. It seems to use alot less memory (i have 28mb free on boot up an 24 after the cache fills up.). Go here http://www.clubimate.com/t-DEVICE_SP5_UPD.aspx (you'll need to login) There are three roms. The only difference is the languages they support and so the amount of space they take. The first one is the WWE rom (the one you have). The next one is the RUS rom, and the last one is the NRE rom. I'm using the NRE rom, which supports UK english, US english and those other languages there. From the same page you can download the 'World Wide English (WWE) software pack' This contains all the files that came with your SP5 eg. AntiVirus, lines, backganmon etc. Install it to the Storage card, and in program files\CDL you will find the cab files for each of the programs. Install each program, and choose storage card as destination. I would skip the antivirus - it just slows the phone down and takes up memory, all while detecting very very few virus'. After everything is installed you can delete the CDL folder. I just leave it there since its not very big, and i can use it every time i hard reset. Hope that helps.
