Guest afhstingray Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 Right, im fairly skinny. Im tall and thin. I need to get a visible increase in muscle before july. Does annyone have any ideas or links with ideas? I tried googling but all i got was a whole bunch of sites trying to sell weight gain products. help!! ;) im planning to try eating more protein and swimming regularly, since thats the easiest way to get an almost full body workout. cheers in advance, and merry xmas!
Guest MECX Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 Nah mate swimming aint no good. Your right about the protein tho, thats what those weight gain products contain loads of. You wanna get your self down the gym and start lifting weights, I would also consider getting a personal trainer--most gyms have them--if you dont know what your doing you can hurt yourself. Hmmm i bet this has sumthin to do with a girl :-D
Guest Killian Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 (edited) I started going to the gym about 3 months back but I went to lose weight not gain it. I lost 3 stone by just lifting weights and doing cardio, I just do cardio now though cus I started bulking up even more :?: It was nice but not what I was after. MECX is right tho, protein is the main source of energy for your muscles but its not the only thing. I personnally wouldn't bother with all the supplements cus they are just after your money and although they do help in some cases its a trial of hit and miss for each individual and at £20 - £30 a tub do you really want to trial each brand? My advice, join the gym, do cardio and weights seperately and week by week increase the intensity. Swimming is good for an all body work out but its just another form of cardio, making the heart fitter, not really the best for bulking up. Hope that helps in some way. Guest Disco Stu Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 I'm so lazy I've got more chance of getting Buffy in 6 months.... ;)
Guest amo Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 (edited) Any particular reason you wanna "get buff" within 6 months? My advice, is plently of variety in your workout. Personally, I have 2 taekwondo sessions a week and 2 muay thai (each session lasting 2 hours). This allows me to work on muscle growth as well as intensive cardio vascular work. By having an applied workout rather than just going to the gym, it means that you are focusing more on learning techniques as opposed to a focus on getting buff - therefore there's much less stress involved, which means you can train even more! To suplement my 8 hours of martial arts training, i have my own set of excercises I do at home. This generally consists of plently of press ups (proper press ups, on knuckles, all the way down - nice and slowly), crunches (do NOT do sit ups as all they do is put strain on your back) whichc are again done nice and slowly to really get the whole set of muscles working, as well as some bench presses and work with some weights. Just lifting 20kg properly instead of 60kg incorrectly will have a much better effect on you, so do ensure you're technique for lifting is focused on. I've been training with this regime for the best part of 4 months now, and have had a very noticable gain in my aesthetic appearance (although that's not my motivation for training, im just a MA addict!) and whilst my method mightn't work for you, it def has done for me. Each to their own! Edited December 26, 2005 by amo

I'll stick my neck out and say most of them don't know what they are on about. Swimming, lifting weights, and all other forms of exercise wont work unless your diet is sorted out. You dont need to spend several hours at the gym - 30-60 minutes a session 3 times a week is enough. www.muscletalk.co.uk

Guest mark4130 Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 I was about to post that exact same link for "muscletalk". Im a member of that forum and its the best resource for training you will find anywhere. Diet and basic training is all you need at the moment. Save the personal trainer money for Whey and weights.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted December 27, 2005 Report Posted December 27, 2005 Been a while since I was lifting weights but along with a decent diet you want to do the weights, bigger the better and leave the swimming aerobic exercises for staying trim. But more importantly take thinks one step at a time and over the weeks increase the weights. Don't forget if you really want to bulk up as such it takes hard work. Finally if you can get a training partner that will really help things along for the few times you "just don't feel like it" it's their job to get the motivation going again.
Guest Confused Stu Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 My regime consists of: - Weight lifting (getting my arse up out of bed every morning) - Wrestling (with my conscience at the KFC queue) - Walking (sometimes all the way from the front door to the car) And as someone who's 5 foot 4 and 12 stone I can promise you this will bulk you up. May not be in the areas you're looking for mind.... Sorry, just couldn't resist. Sorry I haven't got anything constructive to add, but tried a gym once and ended up shattered, unable to walk properly and feeling dead. Decided that can't be good for me and never went back. ;)
Guest afhstingray Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 problem with lifting weights is the technique is very important. you could even get pretty badly injured if its the wrong technique. thats one reason i thought i'd do swimming instead of weights. hmmmmmmm plus gym memberships are pricey
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted December 31, 2005 Report Posted December 31, 2005 Swimming is only good for general fitness and toning as such it's hard to really push yourself and "bulk up" especially as you only have six months. Any decent gym will give you an introduction lesson as it also keeps the health and safety guys off their back as well. Been quite a few years since I last went to the gym properly, when I was a kid I wanted to be a fitness instructor but collage insisted on doing group sports which I hate, so I never went down that path in the end :D But that's life for you ;)
Guest pd.ryder Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 I guess this is an 'old' thread now but you can't beat (excuse the pun ;) ) Martial Arts and the rigorous physical training regimes often employed both pre- and post-training, because they're designed to push you well beyond the "I'm-knackered-and-can't-do-any-more" mind-set. Plus you get plenty of motivation when Sen is jumping on your belly whilst you're doing sit-ups etc :D
