Disaster - SP5 takes a swim!

My beloved (and less than a week old) i-Mate SP5 took a brief swim in the toilet last night!

It was fished out within a second or two (was still on), battery removed and phone dryed.

This morning was totally dead

At lunchtime it briefly flicker on with the blue i-Mate screen but now nothing.

Have a hair dryer gently blowing hot air at moment, I dont suppose anyone can recommend anything more to do ? ;)

Strip it fully, clean it with iso-propyl alcohol and a fibreglass pencil, rebuild and hope for the best. There are many water traps inside that a hairdryer will not reach unless the casing is open and the board exposed.

airing cupboard stripped

...that won't remove the corrosion that has already occured that is causing the short. If that had been done immediatley it would have lessened the impact. I have a c500 board that was BER just 5 hours after being dipped in water accidently, because it wasn't stripped it was just left to dry

Hello,

well, your warranty is now invalid anyways - there is a litmus strip under the sim gate that will now be red - it should be white - so I wouldn't be bothered about warranty. Water damage ain't covered and regardless of the fault in the future SBE will claim it's due to water damage. They're all like that :-(

Powering on OK at first will be because the corrosion hadn't taken root and there are no shorts accross the board as yet. The unit will still be damp internally and the reaction will still be progressing. As it does, the areas of corrosion grow, and two different areas will eventually touch, or one area will spread accross two exposed parts of the board, and short the tracks they are growing from, causing either a dim red light or no power whatsoever.

2 under the aeriel cover. See the typhoon section for basic diss-assembly instructions - recent HTC phones are all roughly the same in basic construction.

Still working ok, however there are darker patches on the LCD, which have grown.

If this is permanent, where can I purchase a new LCD screen

Never seen a sp5 screen available as a spare. You could try SBE but I doubt they'd help :-(

It could just be moisture between the LCD panel and it's refelective backing piece - unless the LCD itself is marked? You can prise the LCD apart and clean these pieces. In between the screen and the metal backplate there is a silver foil piece, a dull translucent plastic piece and a clear plastic piece that transmits the backlight LED light - perhaps there is moisture inbetween these pieces?

LCD itself seemed ok, plus the slight darkening is now 100% over the LCD so actually looks fine :-)
