Guest MetaSyntacticVariable Posted December 29, 2005 Report Posted December 29, 2005 Got an MDA Vario a month and a half ago (T-Mobile direct). Found it to be reasonable - loved the keyboard when texting and the internet access can be very useful. Most of all love having my PDA on me at all times even if it's an uphill struggle getting used to things after years on a palm (I hated the treo's look and size) Problem occurred a week and a half ago. the touch screen just stopped responding. To anything. I tried recalibrating (no dice didn't register the hit). I tried a soft reset again no change. At this point though the pda was seriously limited (can't change the time on alarms without the screen for example!) the phone worked OK so I could make and take calls. Decided I may have screwed up with a third party app and thought that prior going to the trouble of sending the phone for replacement I should do a hard reset. sucks but ah well it's all backed up on the PC... I hard reset and discovered to my horror that the start up screen after this *requires* a screen tap. Not only this but it appears that in WM2003 this could be got round via syncing, using remote file manager and manually deleting a lnk file. either the wm5 / wizard / vario prevents this (guessing wm5). I cannot get it to sync now. I now have a very expensive brick/weak blue tinged torch ;) I called T-Mobile and am sending it back under warranty - sadly this means SBE (seen some bad things on the web - maybe I will be proven wrong). Have posted it via the pack T-Mobile sent to me. Here's hoping they can fix or replace it. I have a feeling my feelings on the vario will (rightly or wrongly) largely depend on how this fix progresses. I was about to go and by a 1GB mini-SD and pocket DVD all my Simpson's episodes. Not so sure I want to invest the time and effort now whether the phone comes quick or not. I haven't seen any other posts anywhere about this (though it must happen reasonably often based on this blog about broken touchscreens I was thinking perhaps this was more of an end of life kind of problem 2-3 years down the line) Ah well. Any suggestions on how to handle smart phone/pda phone warranty cover with TMobile or phone companies in general? I'm veryglad I kept my old nokia 6100 with phone numbers stored in the memory - would have made Xmas a bit tricky without it
Guest crx16 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 My Vario's touchscreen stopped working too, i worked out if i pressed on the case in a certain place it would work, it was only 3 weeks old so t-mobile just replaced it in the shop. Hope this doesnt become a common fault!

Any alternate HTC Wizard people with this issue out there?
Guest MetaSyntacticVariable Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 I called T-Mobile and am sending it back under warranty - sadly this means SBE (seen some bad things on the web - maybe I will be proven wrong). Perfectly happy with the service (bit over 5 working days but given the season not an issue) Just thought I would say I was happy with the service given my (premature) concerns. Off to buy another screen protector now

Guest Symos Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 looks like I'll have to do the same as my screen gave up as well. ;) Mine too I'm afraid... However, as there is a small bump on the screen (which I guess happened as I was trying to get it to "feel" the tapping), there is a chance that they will not replace it for free, if they hold me responsible for damaging the phone. So, what i want to ask is, does anyone know if they replace the whole of the LCD, or just the "touch" sensors or whatever? I'm just trying to figure out how much it could cost.
Guest MetaSyntacticVariable Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 Hi.... where did yo get your screen protector from in the end..... cheers in advance sorry for the extreme lateness of the reply - I got mine at an airport shop (a dixons at gatwick iirc) cheap and fairly nasty but needed it in a hurry. would buy a JAVO Screen protector but the shipping cost is unreal. Not likely to buy one now that I think I will swap this out at end of contract if anything better is around (not impressed with build quality) Matt

In my case they replaced the entire unit (hence back the thing up in full and wipe the memory if you don't want it ending up in someone's collection...) The screen itself is liekely to cost approximately as much in time / labour / parts / risk of it not working due to faulty installation to mean that they replace it entirely as standard practice. Oh yeah - keep your stylus (as instructed) and you get a new one with the replacement ;) Then again the issue with the stylus is it staying *in*
