Hey,

Im new here and i only found out about this site over christmas. I got given an XDA mini S and tomtom navigator software for xmas, but i need to buy a GPS reciever.

Does it have to be a tomtom reciever?

If not, can anyone recommend one?

Many thanks in advance,

paul

Doesn't have to be the Tom Tom one.

Don't fall into the trap of buying the cheapest one you see either. I recommend the Holux GPSlim 236. The cheapest i've seen it is on clove.co.uk for £82 delivered. It works flawlessy with my TT Navigator.

I got a £45 Bluetooth GPS unit from Ebay which works a treat. Charges off USB, uses standard nokia phone batteries and generally does the job nicely. Worked fine with TTM on my C500 and now TTN on my Vario.

Get yourself that and a seperate cradle because that way you can use the receiver with something else should you need to.

Try the Brodit cradles they are well made and designed for specific devices. There4 are a few resellers in the country so best to shop around for prices.

Just something to be aware of before you get your gps receiver. If your car has certain a certain type of heat reflector in the windscreen then the gps receiver may not work through it. We have a Citroen Picasso which has this problem. We have Co-Pilot and a bluetooth receiver. The recevier works great when on the rear parcel shelf but not very well (and sometimes not at all) when near the front windscreen. If your car is like this then you don't want a combined cradle/receiver.

My old Navman jacket was so bad that I had to hold it out of the window to get it to work at the front and so ended up leaving it on the parcel shelf and just listening to the instructions.

There is a potential way around this; my wife's megane has the same problem. If you look at the rear view mirror there is (on her car) a rectancular area of about 18 inches by 4 inches which has slight black dimples on the front windscreen; this area normally doesn't have the reflective coating. This is where I have my Roadangel antenna (I have the luxury of sticking it on there tough). Maybe some sort of attachment to the rear view mirror for the BT GPS?

That might explain why it works better sometimes than others in the front. It always works perfectly in the back and the Picasso has a second charger point in the rear.
