I've been struggling to find a file explorer to let me browse my home network with my qtek 8310.

This seems to be a very straightforward thing to do with a pocket pc.

After realising there was no software available I began to wonder why this was the case.

It appears the smartphone version of wm5 is missing two rather important dlls

-redir.dll

-netbios.dll

These are installed as standard on pocket pcs and together implement smb/cifs = windows network file sharing.

I have discovered you can get arm4vi compatible versions of these dlls using the wince5.0 platform builder. I am sure with these dlls in place someone could port a pocket pc network browser to smartphone.

Its not so easy.

To support SMB (netbios) network redir/ filesystem, whole firmware (platform) need to be built with that option enabled, otherwise it will lack vital support in a lot of places.

Since obviously Tornado firmware was built without that ... its almost no chance that copying dlls will work. The only reliably way is to write/port complete SMB browser, like "SMB explorer" with that support, but there will still no way to automatically integrate it into filesystem and in all other applications.

Its a lot easier for HTC, as all they need is like enable single switch for platform builder (as WM5 already have all needed stuff), but apparently they dont want to include this functionality right now.

Can anyone answer the following two questions

1. Is the smartphone version of windows mobile crippled so that it does not support browsing windows networks (SMB/CIFS)?

2. If this is the case is there an application available that will do the job the OS can't?

TIA
