Guest afarquhar Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 Hey chaps, I need a bit of help deciding. I currently run an XDA IIs and it's getting a bit worn out and needs upgrading. I was inititally really taken with the XDA Mini S until I saw that it has got a OMP200 processor. That's half what I've got at the moment. I browse the web a lot on Wi Fi and use the IIs for playing films and music quite a lot, is the drop in processor going to have a serious effect on that? Also I was just chatting to a colleague who has an iMate Jam and his is an Intel processor running at 416. Does that imply that the iMate k-Jam isa 400 as well. I can't see why they'd go backwards. Any helpwould be appreciated. The small form factor is what I want and the only other option is the XDA Exec (JasJar) which is bigger than the IIs. Cheers Angus

I was inititally really taken with the XDA Mini S until I saw that it has got a OMP200 processor. That's half what I've got at the moment. Two different kinds of processor. Not sure of the technical bits, but the Mini S 200Mhz processor does twice as much work per cycle as the 400Mhz processor so ought to be about the same speed. I had a Mini S for a while and am now with a Magician II, both of which have the 200Mhz processors. I would say that they appear to be a bit slower than my old Magician (400Mhz) but a lot of that is in starting up applications (as they come from slower flash ROM now instead of from faster RAM) and overall, the speed is okay. Not great and certainly no faster than my old unit (and you do expect each generation to be faster than before) but fast enough I think. It also means that a slower processor ought to get more use out of the same size battery.
Guest afarquhar Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 (edited) Ah I see, bit like the old Mac/PC processor comparison problem. So theoretically I should get about the same performance as the IIs but in a much smaller package. Perfect, exactly what I was after. Cheers chap Edited January 3, 2006 by afarquhar
Guest brykins Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 Ah I see, bit like the old Mac/PC processor comparison problem. So theoretically I should get about the same performance as the IIs but in a much smaller package. Perfect, exactly what I was after. More like the Intel/AMD scenario where a slower clockspeed AMD does the same work as a faster Intel chip. I am happy now with my Magician II - some teething trouble, plenty of fiddling and it all seems stable now. In general use I'd say it's the same speed as my original Magician but the overall impression is that it's a bit slower but I am sure that that is mainly in loading apps. I returned my Mini S because of the size (after a year with a Magician I jut couldn't live with the extra 6mm of the Mini S) and doubts about the longevity of the keyboard slider and stylus over an 18month contract. I also found that I didn't need the WiFi, especially with my T-Mobile 40MB data allowance each month. Oh....and I think the Mini S is a bit ugly and the Magician II in Graphite is sooooo sexy.....
