Do i need to format?

hi, i was wondering why my memory card is only letting me save on some of my card. I hav a 512mb mini sd and the memory is at about 50mb left. it wont let me save anything else on ther and says its full wen i try n put stuf via activesync on but on my fone it sez that thers stil 50mb left on my fone. could this be beacuse i need to format the memory card? plz help cheers pricey
