Guest tski Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Can anyone please help? To increase memory, what files can I move from my M500 to my new 1Gb memory card without messing other things up? I've allready moved all my data files from /MyDocuments into a newly created /MyDocuments on the memory card. Unfortunately now I can't view and edit my .xls & word files on my PocketPC from my PC, they are no longer in my C:/MyDocuments/Pocket_PC My Documents folder. Also from within explorer and /MobileDevice, the relevant files on my Storage card have a new suffix .pxl (excel) and .pxw (word) Thanks for any replies ;)
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 I guess you're sync'ing files with the PDA? That only works with files in \My Docs (not \Storage Card\My Docs). I thought I saw a tool that let you change the default sync location, and retain the functionality, but I can't find it anymore. The new file extensions are because the documents are being converted from Word to Pocket Word. If you go into ActiveSync, Options, Rules, Conversion Settings you can tell it not to convert Word and Excel files. As for where to put stuff... tricky. Generally speaking the thing that takes up most space is applications and their data, not your own documents. I only install stuff to the phone itself if it either (a) won't let me put it anywhere else, or (;) it's something I want to use while I'm using WiFi. Get yourself a copy of cabinstl_en.exe (You should be able to find it on here somewhere, else Google it) as this lets you choose where to install apps to. Install to \Program Files if you have no choice Install to \Storage\Program Files if you want it to survive a reset or use it while on WiFi Install to \Storage Card\Program Files for everything else If you haven't already done it the "Hard / Soft Reset Trick" is generally worth doing (if you're comfortable tinkering with settings). It can save you loads of space.

Guest chucky.egg Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 cabinstl_en.exe is a PocketPC app in itself, there's no "installation" required - you just copy it to a folder and run it. I keep my copy on my SD card in the same folder that I use for keeping the CAB (installation files) of each of my applications. When you run it you can choose to associate CAB files with it, so that every time you open a CAB file to install something it opens with cabinstl_en.exe If you do that you'd be better off putting it on Storage so that it's always available, even if you put a different SD card in.
Guest chucky.egg Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Oh, one other thing... When you use cabinstl you can tell it where to install the app to, and can browse through folders and create new folders. The apps get installed directly into the folder you select, not (in most cases) a subfolder. So if you tell it to install App1 to \Storage\Apps then all the files go to \Storage\Apps. What you need to do is create a new subfolder (eg. \Storage\Apps\App1) for each of the apps, and browse into that folder in cabinstl, otherwise they all get jumbled in together.

The storage+memory now has only 4Mb free (it used to be 15 a month ago) and my M500 is running slower. I've looked at moving the big files on it, the biggest are in /windows Can I move/decrease these? (unlikely). The only other files of size are in /My Documents i.e.voicenotes - can I move these to my storage card and still use them from the "Notes Program"? Just seen pics of the HTC Trinity on www.coolsmartphone.com - looks great. I've seen the M3000 (HTC Wizard) too. I'm due a new phone in July, what catches your eye? I definately could do with more power than the M500! (& 3G!!!). Also heard about freecalls on "3" via skype this year!? They don't do HTC handsets though? Thanks again.
