It always interests me how and why we got into the smartphone , the reasons you choose the spv over the nokia ect.

For me i was not the first to get a spv , it was the wife , she wanted msn on her phone , for me i had the small nokia and was at the time happy with it.

The mrs signed up for a year on the orange network and got the spv classic , i wanted to find out more about the phone and found modaco and joined up, after a few days i went and got my first spv , in holland the E200 was due out within a month and i could not wait , the wife used hers for msn and i was exploring all the phone had , month later i got an E200 and well i have had every spv to date ( sadly not the C600 due to the lack of wifi ) even had a few ppc phones the now huge M1000 and the qtek S100 , my wife has not kept up she has gone back to the nokia and clamshell samsungs phones as she has a lappy for her msn now :D

so how did you lot get involved in the smartphone /ppc phones ?? ;)

Well, I always liked the idea of having a Pocket PC but wasn't willing to shell out for one. I still remember being really intrigued when I saw the first Pocket PC Phone (a Trium I think). Then when the XDA came out I would have loved one but again wasn't willing to shell out for one.

Anyway, having lived in Canada for a year before coming back to the UK, I was mobile-less. My first ever phone, a Nokia 3210e ( ), had been stolen while I was at the theatre in London (those artsy types ;) ). Anyway, I was walking past the Orange shop one day and I saw an SPV dummy in the window. I liked the look of it but wasn't convinced until I read a review online waxing lyrical about it. As soon as I got it I was smitten, I still think it's a fantastic looking device to this day!

Three Smartphones and two Pocket PC Phones later and I still get nostalgic when I think of that HTC Canary! :D

Curiosity spiked my interest. Was all set to get the Sendo Z100 Smartphone but it was canned before release. Then I never liked the look of the original SPVs and I turned my attention to other phones (S60 & UIQ) before seeing the C500 and getting it. Never liked it though (nor the C600 i have) but i do really like PPC Phones.

I had (note the past tense) always been with O; I suppose that I was lucky that they brought out the first smartphone. When I saw it I was smitten. In the words of Lou 'I want that one'. Like young lovers I forgave her her flaws, like daily charges but she was the first of a new super intelligent breed and that is more important to me than looks; however the C500 was sooo sexy.

Oops gotta go they are coming to take me away, ha ha!

My first smartphone was SPV C500 .In january 2004 i decided to change my phone ,i used to have Siemens C60 .I did a search on the net and found out this wonder called C500 ,it's almost a year since than and i have never regreted the choice .Now C600 took the place of C500 ,and my next phone will definitely be a smartphone .

Nice topic ,congrats ! ;)

I honestly can't remember what first got me into them. I got the original SPV as soon as it came out, had been into mobiles for some time before that - mainly Nokias.

Joined here when the forum first started. After the SPV, I went Phone Edition for a while, with the O2 XDAII, then the iMate Jam, returning to the SP3 which I still use.

I've had a few trips away from Smartphones, but never for long, always come back!!

I recently tried the Nokia N90, it lasted 2 hours. Then guess what, back to MS!!

A prodigal Son perhaps, Peter? No killing the sheep/lamb/goat/animally-bible-thingy (but not a Doggy, I wouldn't mind if it was a pesky cat though) for you my young friend.....

Trust me, the animals are safe!!

Though to bring this back on-topic, using a Smartphone helps keep them safe! :| :??:

My first smartphone was an MPX 200, only lasted a fortnight before my teenage son decided he wanted it!! Anyway I didn't mind too much as this allowed me to get a C500. Before the MPX 200 a phone was just a phone to me, but then I discovered that I could have my work email & calendar on it, play music, games and watch movies etc and I've been hooked ever since ;)

I saw the SPV classic advertised in the Metro paper and with all the features msn, power point, media player etc i thought it was a bargain at £99! Then i went hunting on the net and found it for £20! There was no stopping me then. It had it's flaws but at the time it was WAAAaaaaayyyy ahead of anything else on the market, especially compared to the C45 i had at the time.

I had that for a year then went onto an MPX200, probably the best phone i ever had. Faster, sleeker and as versatile as the original SPV.

Then about 15months later i saw the i-mate Jam on here and was amazed at what they had cramed into such a small tidy looking device. I never thought i'd be able to afford one but a bit of searching online and i found one on a reasonable contract for £10!!!! When i 1st held it i loved it (yes i know i need to get out more!)

I've had it for a year now and have bought Tomtom fairly recently. My friends find it hard to believe that it's a phone, PDA, sat nav and media player all in one, and when i tell them it cost me £10 they nearly turn green and fall over!

Anyhow, contract is up in around 6months and as it stands i'm not sure there's anything else i'd rather have at the moment. The MDA Compact II is slower than it's predecessor and i'm not sure i'd like that. So it's a case of wait and see what the next 6months bring! ;)

I remember paying £120 for the SPV when it first came out and also had a Gshock watch thrown in from Orange directly. The watch is still going on the same battery after all these years and is more reliable ;)

After that is was just whatever came my way with contracts being renwed etc.

At the time there were two Smartphone forums starting off, I can not remember the other one now but it never took off and probably not even running now.

For me it was convergence.

I was using Palm's then PocketPCs tethered to my plain old Nokia phone for a long while when I read a review on Jenneth.info about the SPV Smartphone.

I believe there was also a link on her site to Modaco where I became infatuated with the phone, reading every thread I could, until I bought one on ebay from someone in the UK.

Other than a few ocassional romps over the the PPCPE side....I haven't looked back since.

I remember a few Yahoo! groups in addition to Modaco, and a few mentions on sites like Britehand.com....but Modaco was/is the FIRST/BEST Smartphone forum with the most knowledgable community I have ever found.

I still have my SPV classic, I owe it alot since it got me a first for my dissertation at uni, worked for orange doing a TV listings program (beta tested on early modaco), they even gave me an E200 which was nice for a student :-)

had an MPX200 and then moved on to a PPC phone (jam).

Oh but i do miss the good old days :-D

Funny how despite it's faults that original SPV had a little more magic then any of the devices since ;)

Actually, now that I think of it the closest I've had to the excitment of that original SPV was when I got my first Pocket PC Phone the MDA III. That was pretty exciting too! :D
