Guest bluesmudge Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 As always with my smartphone experience i begin by saying how wonderful something is then i come back and scream. My building was somehow blocking signal from orange so i brought an external ariel for it which sticks in the window and plugs in the back of the phone . . . anyway it works fine, brilliant and fualtless except for now i can hardly get any signal anywhere else. Its not totally bad, just that most of the time i have one bar or none, though rarely in clear / high areas i get full signal. so here it is, ariel works great for a few months, then one day you won't be able to get signal in places you previously could. if anyone knows what i can do about this let me know, anyone considering an ariel take heed.
Guest fluffcat1 Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 The display is an indicator and not a true representation of the actual signal strength. Have you ever reset the phone with the booster attached? This may then give the phone a high top end as the full strength indicator and when you're out and about without your booster the actual signal is too low on the phone's scale. Used to get this if you factory resetted a Nokia 6110 whilst in a carkit. In the service mode you can make those show full signal even with the internal antennae removed... Try resetting the phone without the booster attached. Richard
Guest bluesmudge Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 I did wonder and already tried . . . and i know the signal indicator is only a guide BUT when the phone just sits there displaying searching where Orange used to be its obviously not just in a low signal . . . . it must be hardware, though me thinks i will set the phone again.
Guest mcwarre Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 I had the same problem with my C500. Eventually had to get it replaced. New one was fine using external for 3-4 months then guess what....

New one was fine using external for 3-4 months then guess what.... I've never actually looked closely at Typhoon, but with the other HTC phones I've had to fix aeriel connectors on ( Tanager, Voyager, and a Blueangel ), the external aeriel / carkit connector is part of the main aeriel circuit. So if you break the external connector off, for example, the internal aeriel signal is no longer a complete circuit so you get poor / no reception. How are your external aeriels' shielded / mounted? Is it possible you had a lightning strike or similar whilst it was connected? There are fusable resistors around the aeriel connector that would be easy to spot if blown, either side of the external connection, and if one of them back from the connector to the internal aeriel had gone it would explain the symptoms. If it's under warranty, send it back, if not, first check for continuity between the external connector and the internal aeriel connections with the aeriel cover removed. Richard
