Guest randomspam Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Hi, I've searched all the existing posts regarding wifi problems and the solutions haven't fixed mine yet unfortunately. I have a Netgear WGR614 V4 wireless router. I have setup my MDA Vario with the router, I have assigned it a specific IP address 192.168.0.6 and set it up via the routers wireless control list to be allowed onto the network wirelessly. When I turn wireless on on the Vario it finds the network and connects. When I check my router setup it is listed as an attached device on the correct mac address and IP. My wireless is set to best performance and is obviously turned on. I can ping the vario from my wireless laptop no problem. My router is in b&g mode. I launch IE and try google only for it to give up "locating" it and get the message "the page cannot be found, check the name and try again". It's doing my head in, I've tried everything suggested on here so far. The internet is accessible with GPRS and when connected to my laptop via USB. Can anyone suggest any other things to check or try? Cheers Rs
Guest minty1978 Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 sounds like a DNS server problem to me. i had the same problem. your ISP should have details on there web site of thier DNS servers, or it will be in your router settings somewhere. write them down and enter them manually into the vario. under Wireless lan settings, click menu, then network cards. then click SDIO WLAN adapter. then click the tab for 'name servers' and enter your DNS server number/s S
Guest blun Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Check your wireless power saving settings - set it to minimum power saving.
Guest soup dragon Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 (edited) Yep, the problem seems to be that you can ping your internal network OK but cannot get out of the house! To do this you need this you need two extra addresses; the gateway address (out of your network) which is the address of your router (probably 192.168.0.1) and the DNS address. This is the address of a server that turns a URL (www.google.com) into an IP address which all computers need to find a location on the internet (URLs are just an easy way of remembering public IP addresses). You can either set the DNS settings manually or automatically. If you set your laptops IP and DNS address up manually you can get the DNS from there, but if your router is working as a DHCP server (which it probably is) then you can set the vario to get it's IP address and DNS automatically from the router. Basically, if your PC is never going to move from your home network you may as well assign it a static IP address manually (as you have done on the vaio). But on mobile devices you should let the addresses be assigned by a DHCP server 'cos your 192.168.0.6 would not work on someone elses network which may be running 192.168.1.x. Guest randomspam Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 minty1978 and soup dragon - I think you both could be on to something here, this may just be a case of my own stupidity afterall. I had entered my DNS server previously or at least I thought I had, having checked it today though I appear to have entered the default gateway address as my DNS by mistake, this is most likely the problem. Your explanation soup dragon makes complete sense. I take onboard your thoughts on assigning a static IP or DHCP, I've yet to use it anywhere else but my house so far but I imagine I will use it on the road and will test it with DHCP tonight too. I shall try it when I get home and report back, fingers crossed!
Guest minty1978 Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 good luck, let us know how you get on ;)
Guest randomspam Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Hi, tried it all out last night and entered the DNS correctly this time! I found it still wasn't working so I then removed the static IP I had set for the Vario on my router and allowed it to use DHCP as you suggested and hey presto, wireless internet to my Vario. Weird how the static IP didn't work but hey ho, no worries. Thanks for your help guys ;)
Guest minty1978 Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 excellent news, i find DHCP works best anyway, let the router do the work for you, it will avoid ip conflicts then.

Anyway you're up and running now, DHCP is much more conveniently when it's running properly - the only issue with it is that it can take a few seconds longer to connect to the network while the device is being assigned an IP address by the DHCP server. Glad to have helped. 8)
Guest jedi_ringo Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 i too am having the same trouble if i add a static ip address i can connect to the router and other devices on my network within the ip range 192.168.0.101 to 200 i have the DNS set for my broadband provider and the defalt gateway of 192.168.0.100 but no joy getting out of building... any ideas .. had the MDA 1 day made only 2 calls on it... both to T-Mobile help desk!!!
