I am using the Audiovox SMT5600 with a 1GB MiniSD card. I was wondering what the smallest acceptable size is that will still yield a decent image on the phone screen.

Most of my images are in the 30-70KB size range and I was wondering how much smaller I can go before I get a loss in image quality.

Than the best resolution in my opinion would be 176x220 (the phone's resolution) and if the pictures are resized from bigger pictures the quality will be better .In order to achieve smaller sizes the compresion has to be bigger but that may result in quality loss .A good quality picture to that resolution will have an average of 10-20 kb wich is not to much .I hope it helps you . ;)

Ok - had a chance to play with this and as Cold Fire said

20KB is fine for decent everyday images.

30 KB is a little cleaner especially if you zoom in at all

10KB is fine if you are using some of the photos for Caller ID

I did not see much of a difference if I went up to 50 or 70 KB for most of the pics but then again the screen on the SMT5600 ispretty small so YMMV.
