Guest poacher Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 Someone please give me some pointers on setting this up before \i reegate this phone to the big bin in the sky!!!! Only had it a week!!!
Guest poacher Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Just an update...... Managed to connect to network (no idea how). But cannot access internet or e mail. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.
Guest Pondrew Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I'd recommend a software solution to set it up for you. Software that checks the detected wifi network and confirms that it is internet ready. Like Pocket WinC or Wififofum... Otherwise there should be a Wireless Manager on the device which will tell the device how you prefer to connect for date download. Choose wifi. If it still defaults to GPS then it probably means the network you're connected to isn't internet enabled.
Guest poacher Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Hi, I've used wifofofum, vxutil etc. The problem lies with there being no visible connection that IE & Outlook can use, as said I have good connection to my network, which has internet access (I'm on a Wifi laptop at the moment). It's really doing my head in. Help!!!!!
Guest Pondrew Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 So the wifi software says that the connection is internet ready, the device says you're connected to the network, and yet it still can't connect to the internet? Does it default to GPRS instead?
Guest poacher Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 No on this spv you double tap the g icon & turn wifi on, once its on & connected you have to physically switch the wifi off or go out of range. When switched off/out of range it defaults back to G. I'm stumped, at least setting up my wifi laptop was easy but this........ :x

Guest poacher Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 So it definately is making a secure connection to the wifi network? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep, connected to wifi network, half a meter of strength, in infrastucture mode. ????????????
Guest Pondrew Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 The issues I've had with wifi before have usually been a result of the wifi router for whatever reason not assigning my device with an IP address. When this happens it appears to have succesfully connected but the connection won't be internet ready. In most cases powering the router off and on again can resolve this BUT I don't want to interfere with your existing wifi network... Still, wifi software should say if the connection has assigned an IP address or not and if the connection is internet ready. I used Pocket WinC on which a tap of a button checks the connection and then opens IE... Does Wififofum do the same? Finally, when your device detects the network did it ask if it connects to the internet? Or did it ask you to specify whether it was Home/Work?
Guest poacher Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I've tried both ways, manual input of addresses and then tried power off wifi, delete network and restar. It gave me an option of work/internet, tried internet, entered network key & now connected BUT still no browsing or e mail. Also tried auto IP but still the same as above. I haven't restarted my router yet, I'll give it a try & see if it works. Cheers
Guest poacher Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I tried restarting my router but to no avail, I even set my svp to auto IP but it didnt even show up on my client list from my router. I am completely stumped now, the svp is showing as being connected to the network but there is just no access. I have even used the mac addres filter on my router setup but still nothing. I have router, desktop pc and two laptops running in this network, I thought it would have been easy to set this up, its a nightmare
Guest Pondrew Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I realise this isn't exactly logical but try telling the device that the network connects to work. This has been suggested in the past as sorting out connectivity problems with wifi on the SPV M2000. Hopefully it'll work for the M1500...
Guest poacher Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I follow what you are saying but it is the wrk network that I'm using, albeit I have renamed it to My home Network. I have tried connecting in both work(home) and internet but nothing. Its almost as if it was back in the days of dial up ;) when you had to tell IE & Outlook what connection to use. Still baffled :?: :?:
Guest fraser Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 Start from the ground up. Download vxUtil and use it to ping things: Start with 1) the router 2) the IP for google (216.239.39.104) 3) "google.co.uk". If 1) fails, the WiFi isn't working, check encryption. If 2) works and 3) fails, DNS is broken. If 2 & 3 pass and the phone still can't browse, it's defo the work/home connection nonsense.
Guest poacher Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 Strange thing - I now have access to my shared files on my laptop. However, still no internet browsing or email via pocket pc. I can also activesync via wifi. Any ideas?
Guest farmgorgon Posted January 18, 2006 Report Posted January 18, 2006 poacher- I'm having the same problem with my M1500. The icon shows me connected but it won't load explorer. When I Configure Wireless Networks, my router connection is there and 'available', when I highlight it, all my network settings look good. I've found another open wireless network that is available- no use. Explorer gives the same error 'Cannot connect with current network settings' Gives me the option of dismissing- which loads with GPRS- or 'Settings' which lets me set up/ modify new ISP/ Work connections.....
Guest poacher Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Hi all, still having problems with my wifi setup, i'm now on my 2nd spv m1500, apparently, according to the techies at orange ' this handset is broken' (i would never have guessed). But so far, still the same problems, good connection but no browsing. Anyone help - really getting annoyed with this phone. Cheers
Guest Pondrew Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Neither the wifi config software mentioned before nor Fraser's advice helped? It could be an incompatibility with the router but expect it's more setup based. When I had a wifi capable Pocket PC Phone (MDA III/HTC Blue Angel) the wifi setup was extremely temperamental when first trying to connect to the internet through a wifi connection.
Guest poacher Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Nothing has worked at all, as said, I'm even on my 2nd phone!!! Orange suggested going into one of their shops & trying to connect to their network but even that didn't work, I have also tried 2 other networks (with their permission of course). It seems as if the m1500 just doesnt work. Any suggestions? (Must say - bloke in the orange shop came back all smug & said 'Done it', but that was only connecting via gprs NOT wifi!!!) Orange techies have no answer either & I'm still waiting for them to get back to me (2 weeks now).
Guest farmgorgon Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 FWIW, Poacher, I researched my same problem thoroughly and couldn't get it to work either. Had to arrange for the unit to be returned to Orange within the 7 days otherwise I would have been stuck with it....... FG
Guest poacher Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 As said, this is my second 1500, orange have contacted me today & passed on their number for HP who apparently make the 1500. If anyone wants the number let me know. Cheers
Guest Pondrew Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Errr. HTC might have something to say about that! They are the real manufacturers of the SPV M1500. High Tech Computer Corp. have been known to make HP products but sounds like the Orange rep you were speaking to is VERY confused. I imagine if the number really is for HP then they'll deny any knowledge of the product, understandibly so! Maybe the number is for HTC in which case you MIGHT get somewhere...
Guest poacher Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Yet another update....... Orange say its up to HTC, HTC its up to Orange, 2nd phone, nothing works, interestingly enough, a friend of mine has the same phone, albeit a different provider, he is on his 2nd phone but with all the same problems. I'm sure that Orange are in breach of contract saying that they can supply a phone with wifi capabilities when clearly they cant!!! As you can guess, I'm outside 7 days & still no further forward. Next step...........THE BIN
Guest fraser Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 Next stop: Trading Standards. You'll stop playing support-call tennis once you speak to them. ;) Though, the fact that you've had two devices with the same problem tends to make me think it's not a hardware fault. Have you tried after a hard reset? Install nothing except WiFiFoFum and xvUtil and try and get it set up following the previous instructions.

Any ideas? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just a thought, having just reset up another M1500 (I sat on mine and broke the screen), go into the connections and make sure that you have the proxy setting unchecked.
