Guest MJM Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 (edited) I tried a search but it didn't turn up what I was looking for. Story, After several phone calls and weeks of waiting Cingular finally sent the sim unlock code for my MPx220. They needed my name, Cingular phone number, and the IMEI number off of the phone. So now I'm set right? Well not exactly. So I took out my Cingular sim card and powered the phone up. I got the message "invalid or missing sim card" on the screen. I entered the sim unlock code and pressed "done".....nothing happened. I do not have another sim card just yet, because I have not traveled to the country where I want to be able to use the phone. I will purchase the card when I arrive there. I want to make sure this all works before I go there. Any advice? Thanks. Edited January 14, 2006 by MJM
Guest smeg36 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 You must have another provider's SIM card to enter the unlock code. It is likely the phone is already unlocked, the majority of MPx220's came SIM unlocked straight out of the box. You don't have any friends, collegues, etc. that have a different provider than you? You could even go to a T-Mobile store or somewhere and ask one of the reps if they will let you put a SIM in your phone to unlock it for use with their service.

I am not in the US, and Japanese sim cards don't work because they are one of the only countries in the world who decided to go to something other than GSM. I would like to know the exact procedures to enter the unlock code prior to actually having to use it. It would be even better if I could enter the code and confirm that the phone was unlocked before I get someplace only to find out it isn't and it doesn't work and now I have no means of communication. If there is some way to confirm that my phone is unlocked that is what I am looking for. Thanks.
Guest smeg36 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 The only way to be sure is put another SIM in it. There is no other way to verify either the code or the current lock status.

I take it the first step is "insert non-provider sim card"?
Guest smeg36 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Yes. Put in a non-provider SIM and wait for it to ask for your code. If and when it does (as I already said, there's a good chance it is already unlocked if it is from Cingular), enter the code. If the code they gave you is good, and you enter it correctly, the phone will finish booting and work.
