Changed default input method

I changed the default input method on my M500 ages ago, and after a Hard Reset I did it again, but this time I get odd behaviour

After I do a Soft Reset I have to change the SIP to any other one, and then change back to Letter Recogniser. If I don't do that then:

1) The backspace key on the SIP doesn't do anything

2) I can write letters, but can't move back or forwards, and can't erase anything

3) If I write a name as the recipient of a message it looks up in Contacts and suggests names, but if I try to select one of those suggested names it pops up the Start menu instead and wont let me choose the names!

This is what I did to change the Default SIP (I use Letter Recogniser):

I've double checked the Registry value.

It seems to me that it's not properly selecting the Input Method. Anyone got any suggestions?

I should have said that this affects more than just the Messaging app - the "faults" with the input affect anything that uses Text input (Word, Excel, Calendar, Messaging, Contacts etc etc)

Ah, OK then

In case this happens to anyone else (probably unlikely, but you never know) I removed the Reg setting, and used the tweak included in RegKing 2003 which does the same thing

Working again now

Nope, turns out that hasn't fixed it

Can anyone post the original registry setting for this key, so I can see if going back to the "standard" fixes it

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ ControlPanel \ SIP \ DefaultIM

Thanks

OK, this is getting sad cos I'm the only one in this thread, but... I've changed the Reg setting to Keyboard (the default) and noticed that it's doing the same thing there too. So it's not specific to Letter Recogniser.

What I've noticed is that with Screen Guard set to "Auto lock on device start" I get this problem. If I turn that setting off I don't get the problem. Very odd.

As a quick work-around I've discovered that all I need to do is select the Letter Recogniser SIP again (no need to change to something else then back to Letter Recogniser)

Going to have to play around a bit more, and write down what works and what doesn't before I'm going to get anywhere with this problem.

OK, not 100% sure, but I think this is down to Vito Button Mapper

Have tried removing it and the symptoms go away, reinstalling (which doesn't work 1st time for some reason) and it comes back

Looking for a replacement button mapper now

I had a brief look at this a while back as a button mapper:

But never got round to actually using it.

Well done on getting to the bottom of that, dude - didn't look like fun!

I'm not sure I have got to the bottom of it TBH

I've just finished rebuilding from scratch again. We'll see.

What I noticed was that in button mappings I had 2 extra buttons listed that don't actually exist. But these mystery buttons also showed up when I rebuilt the phone without installing a button mapper.

The only other thing I have that uses button mapping is Screen Guard... so back to my first guess then! (just checked and the phantom buttons aren't there now after a fresh rebuild without Screen Guard)

On top of all that the problem seems to be intermittent. I haven't spotted a pattern of activity that always triggers it.

The worst thing though isn't the problem itself (the work-around is actually quite easy and only two taps) but it's the feeling that the phone is "dirty" and malfunctioning. I've been thinking about Symbian again since this started...

OK, for now I've chickened out of getting right to the bottom of this.

I've rebuilt the phone by hand and not reinstalled Vito Button Mapper or Screen Guard.

So far no problems.

I've gone back to the built-in button mapper, and a combination of Picture Password and Delta Lock (both of which I was using previously)

OK, after a few days without the problem I reinstalled Screen Guard this morning (haven't reinstalled Vito Button Mapper) and the problem returned immediately.

Bugger.

TBH though I think I'm going to try to live with it because Picture Password was getting on my nerves.
