Plucked up the courage to proceed with updating my C600 to the SP5 ROM.

I can report that it has been successful.

Nice clean WM5 imate Rom - no Orange stuff/branding etc... lovely ;)

No issues with the C600 missing hardware (wi-fi)...

I previously de-certed the C600, followed by toggle unlocking it and then changed the CID. Rom update then proceeded without any hicups.

So you would now be in a perfect position to once and for all shut up all those people that think wi-fi on the C600 is only disabled by SOFTware, and state that the C600 with the SP5 ROM STILL does not have wi-fi, yes?

thank-you for that - I agree with shadamehr and this is what i have been saying all the time

I can confirm that even after updating the C600 with the SP5 ROM, the C600 DOES NOT HAVE Wifi.

Not really.

I have put the imate ROM for the SP5 on the C600.

The imate ROM is nice and clean, and works great on the C600...

No Orange branding and stuff ;)

have any of you checked the following registry entry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\WiFiPlugIn

there is a entry for WiFiIsExits with a DWord value of 0

i tried changing it to 1 but even after restarting the phone it goes back to 0

My handset is a SPVC600 and from orange.

Now if the WiFi Hardware is not present then why HTC left a registry entry for Wifi there?

i'm using MobileRegistryEditor to view the registry.

any ideas chaps........

What does it matter, you have a post above from someone with a C600 using the SP5 rom, STILL NO WiFi ... which i think proves once and for all the C600 does NOT have it!!

as for why does registry entries still exist..... maybe because some of the software they use is universal, so they can stick it on all the smartphones they produce, and control the features for that software by a simple registry entry

for example, does the C600 still have the comm manager app???? if yes then they would not want the WiFi options to show in the comm manager on the C600.. but why should they be expected to write a seperate application for the C600???

also maybe if the C600 supports a sd i/o memory slot, it could be possible to put a mini-sd wifi card into the phone - in which case you may be able to activeate things like the wifi manager within the comm manager

another way of looking at it, why does my desktop have registry entries for bluetooth, when there is no bluetooth available????? if i change the entries will my hardware all of a sudden grow a bluetooth module??

i think its time to live upto the fact that the specs the phone was published with, were actually correct!!

The C600 simply does not have the necessary wifi chips and bits inside the case.

Sorry

so where can i find this update? (i'm new in WM)

It is in there because Wi-Fi is supported by the Operating System (ie Windows Mobile 5) however only if the underlying hardware supports it, which it doesnt.

The thing that changing the ROM doesn't enable the Wifi doesn't proof the device does not have the WiFI hardware inside. It is the same thing like saying that an SIM locked SPV C600 loaded (by changing the CID) with the unlocked Qtek ROM will be SIM unlocked which is not true because you have to write a value in the zone 0 of DiskOnChip which is not changed by the ROM update. The only way to prove that the device doesn't have the WiFi is to dismantle one and see if there is an WiFi chipset or not). There are more reasons to think that the function is disabled not missing. If nobody wants to void the warranty we could gather the money (from more people) and buy a device for testing purposes (like they did with the iPod Nano and Xbox 360 when they bought them just to destroy)

Oh for goodness sake ... this needs to be resolved once and for all!!

I don't understand why there are so many C600 owners banging on about not having wifi - and believing the hardware is there but it is simply not activated - If you are that bothered about it why get the C600 - go and get an SP5!!

Am I right in saying that if there is wifi hardware on the c600 there will be extra arial/receiver parts in the top of the device?

I will take off the arrial cover on my C600 and perhaps someone can do the same with a SP5 - we can then compare??

Just an idea..

There was told million of times - THERE IS NO WI-FI HARDWARE INSIDE C600, THIS IS BY DESIGN.

But some people just dont listen.

I never said it has WiFi I just said that tests done till now don't prove it doesn't have the piece of hardware inside. If somebody did a photo of the hardware inside C600 and there is no WiFi chipset that would be a proof. Till now I haven't saw such a picture - I saw one for Universal. Just think practically. An WiFi chipset has a very small price at very very big quantities. So what is cheaper: create 2 different production lines or disable somehow the hardware?

Sorry to disappoint you, but "lack of proof" wont make WiFi chip magically appear.

You still can beleive if it comforts you ;)

Even if somebody shows you the PCB print/photo, you still can pretend that "this unmarked chip can be a WiFi", luckily there is some (omniously) marked chips there.

For Faraday (C600) "price gain for removing WiFi" was not issue. Case size, smaller weight & longer battery life was, that's exactly the point why this separate (from Tornado) platform was conceived.

AGREED!!!!!

Agreed also .. no WiFi on C600 ... Orange get it cheaper that way and already have handsets that have WiFi on it, in fact that hardware also might have 3G (M5000).

I still think they should have had WiFi variant so that they could sell shed loads, but they didn't ...

There are only three ways to prove if WiFi exists on the C600;

- Ask HTC (like getting blood out of a stone?).

- Ask Orange (where did Mr Orange go? ... O2 by any chance! lol)

- Open up your C600 and search for a wifi chip .. :D

I dont want to open my C600 as i kinda like it ;)

And why would i need Wifi? If i'm in range of my WiFi access, it is far easier to walk the 20 metres to my PC and see the whole web page ...

:D

As i've said before, WiFi does NOT exist in the C600.

Can someone who updated to this ROM version tell me if the SPV C600 can receive and display channel info? I am a Vodafone customer and I want to use the service that shows my current location (don't tell me about the cell-id project, I know about that, I just want to know if channel list can be done on this model).

Thank you.

After the update were all the bluetooth profiles supported by WM5 back and not just the one Orange enable?

Try this.....

On your Home Screen (with Wireless Home Screen Layout from settings-->HomeScreen), if you have bluetooth turned on you will an indication for the same. Now navigate to the blutooth on and click.

You will see a menu with Bluetooth, Activesync & Profile. Now press 1 and you will notice that the phone is trying to enable or disable WiFi 'cause in the menu

there is Blank, then

0 Activesync

2 Bluetooth

3 Profile...

well where the heck is 1?

Also when i did this i had an icon for Wifi On and Wifi Off but i was not able to set the wifi connections.... maybe a bug... now i dont see the icon... i will try to make it happen again and post some pics...
