Hotmail vs Email on the Wizard

Do either have any distinct advantages over the other? Can you set up real email to check for new messages every x minutes, cos that doesn't seem to be an option with hotmail. I've currently just got my hotmail mail as an account, and i'm happy enough, but if its worth me setting up a proper mail address on my server (remote, so not exchange server or anything.. just normal reseller hosting on a nix box) then i'll change over to that instead.

Also it doesn't report how much data transfer is being used when i'm idly checking my mails, i'm presuming its literally 1 or 2k each time?

Yes there is an option to set normal email accounts to be checked every x minutes. You can even set which Internet Connection to use, so for example mine only collects emails every 15 minutes when I'm connected via WiFi.

If your device connects to the server and finds no new mail, the check will probably take just a few kb. If you are concerned about data usage, have you also seen the ability to select how much of emails should be downloaded?

When out of the office, I often set the phone to just retreive the headers of the emails. I can then read the Subject and To lines and decide wether to download the full message or more likely simply delete the email if it's spam!

the only problem I find is that it doesn't actually delete the mail off the server when it downloads it.

so haveing gone to the trouble of checking and managing your email away from home, when you get in and fire up outlook, it downloads everything and you have to delete it all again.

What I would LOVE to see is full outlook integration whereby you sync full accounts from desktop to phone and visa-versa. i.e you download on the move and then transfer back to the desktop when you sync. (obviously you'd need options to diable the download of large attachments etc) This would be great especially when you've got 40mb a month to play with.

PS please someone tell me I've missed something really obvious and there is actually a way to do this!!!

If you delete the messages on the phone and then send and receive, it should delete them from the server. I'm sure that's whats supposed to happen, but I'll check it out now...

OK. Just tested it now and it doesn't work. Surely that's a pretty obvious thing for the phone to do! Unless maybe I'm also missing something here!!

I don't think it did it on my C500 either, but I can't really remember.

perahps IMAP might be more sucessful, but I doubt it.

Also outlooks handling of IMAP is sucky.

Are there any desktop and mobile versions of an email program which handle IMAP well, it might be the answer to my prayers.

and another thing that'd be cool.

Push email to the Vario with outlook integration. (say you can turn on and off the pushing)

ahh, how we can dream.

I think you are checking your POP email, and not syncing with an Exchange Server. I signed up with 4smartphone and sync all the time, and all changes I make on my Wizard are reflected on the server, contacts, appointments, and emails. Even the fact that I have read a message, so all in all it works great. If you are simply checking your pop mailbox, you are not syncing. Good luck!

Yeah I know I'm checking my POP mail. It's just that normally an email client will have options to either delete all messages from the server when they are retreived, delete them after a certain period of time or remove them when they are deleted in the client. The wizard has none of these options. I assumed the latter was set as default, but tested to find none of them are actually possible!

I was wrong, you can make the vario delete mail off the pop server.

either

(1) Go to tools, options and then the storage tab set the "empty deleted items" to immediately, and evey time you send and receive it will delete those items you delete

(2) leave the tab as it is, manaually empty deleted items menu, tools "empty Delted items" and tap send and receive.

I'm not sure what the "empty on connect/disconnect" will do, perhaps it'll work and delete the items on your device when you disconnect GPRS then on the server when you send and receive again.

So the vario can be an effective email tool :)

Is there anyway of getting the Vario to Enable the wifi connection purely to do an email sync? (And then turn of the wireless when its complete) - like every 15 minutes?

Having wireless switched on all day seems to sap my battery a lot quicker.
