Why no sound from my MP3's?

I've just added a load of MP3's to my C500, but I hear no sound when I play it back

Yet I've set one as a ring tone and it works fine :?:

What's happening?

OK, apology for the dumb question, but I've done it before myself! When you play the MP3's (I'm assuming in Windows Media Player) you haven't got the volume set to zero or mute, have you? I know it sounds obvious, but I couldn't work out why mine wouldn't play and once I had the application set to zero and once I had the master volume (on the side of the phone) set to zero.

I'm not bright. ;)

Which ROM are you using? I'm fairly sure I remember one of the ROM updates adding MP3 ringtone compatabiity - could be you're on an older one?

Sorry, kind of clutching at straws here. Anyone else got any ideas?

Could it be worth uploading a small MP3 that doesn't work so other owners can try it to see if it's the phone or file that's at fault?

Does it work if you try and make a call?

Something similar to this happened to me, and it was caused by the little switch that is pressed by the jack for the headset jamming "on", causing the phone to stick in handsfree mode all the time.

Poking it with a stick (or paperclip or something) unpressed the button and everything was back to normal.

I'm using ROM 4.21.1088 (Build 15045.2.6.0)

And as requested, I've uploaded an MP3. The strange thing is, they work on my PC and also if I set them as a ring tone, but I just can't play them through Media Player ;)

Zip file attachment contains 2 CAB files in it. Use 'MP3Fix.cab'. It will re-associate MP3 files to Media Player.

SoundFix.zip

I hope it works.

Oh sorry for that. I tried your MP3 on my C500 and it played... "message from the dark side blah blah blah"

Everyone likes a bit of Yoda from Star Wars ;)

So why doesn't it work on mine? :D

Considering it to be 'hardware' problem, try the suggestion by Mr Clark. If it is just due to corrupt registry then try a hard reset. ;)

Stupid question, but how do I do a hard re-set and what am I likely to lose?

,Jan 20 2006, 11:46]A hard reset will erase all phone data (contacts, programs in \Storage etc) so backup before proceeding.

Wow, that's serious :?:

What's the best way to back everything up? I've done the orange backup thing, but will that work?

I see it doesn't remove the SIM block, but does it remove the app block again?

From experience, I just backup my Contacts using Jeyo Mobile Companion. The programs installed on my phone I backup by hand, that is, manual copy-paste to my PC. I don't have important things to backup on my Calendar and Inbox but if they are important for you, try some third party programs out there like Sprite Backup or Sunnysoft Backup Manager. Just don't backup the registry since we are suspecting a corrupted registry on your phone. Backing it up then eventually loading it again on your phone would be pointless. I don't use the Orange backup program.

As for hard reset, the process will re-enable application lock but will not affect SIM lock (if yours is already networked unlocked). It will re-write phone data so that you have a fresh phone after (back to factory defualts). Therefore, after a hard reset, your phone is expected to be app-locked but not SIM-locked. You can still use non-Orange SIM but you can't run/install unsigned programs. To run unsigned programs, you have to decertify your phone once again.
