hey am kinda new to smartphones.. can someone explain what is wi-fi???

I'm sure a more technical description of Wi-Fi will be along in a minute, but short version is that it's the technology used for "wireless internet" access.

In the same way that your mobile phone uses the GSM network to make a call many miles from the transmitter, and you can use Bluetooth to talk to another Bluetooth device up to 10m away, or Infra-Red to enable your remote to control your TV, you can use WiFi to pick up signals from a WiFi router.

The router is plugged onto the end of an internet connection and acts as a wireless sender. A WiFi phone can talk to this sender and hence access the internet through that connection. This is generally much quicker and cheaper than using the mobile phone company's mobile network.

You can set up a WiFi network at home by plugging a router onto the end of your broadband line or modem, or you can use WiFi to pick up internet at most "HotSpots" - which are springing up in coffee shops, airports, McDonald's and lots of pubs. Only trick is that there you'll get charged for using the hotspot - prices vary.

If you're still not sure, check our Wikipedia.com and look up WiFi, they'll explain better than I can! ;)

so can i go on the internet on my spv through my pc internet router?

If your phone has WiFi and your router is wireless (compatabile with 802.11b). I don't think the C550 has WiFi buit in though.

You can still use the computer's internet connection on your phone, either by plugging your phone in to the PC (so Activesync connects up), then you can set Activesync to allow the phone to "pass-through" to the computer's internet connection.

If you fancy a wire-free version and your PC has Bluetooth, connect the phone to Activesync via Bluetooth (tricky, but there are guides around MoDaCo) and then you have the same pass-through to the PC's internet connection without the wires.

In short, without WiFi on the phone you can't use phone to router direct, but you can go phone to PC to router quite happily.

Sorry it's a bit vague, I've been using my M500 with a WiFi card for too long, I can't remember the settings I used to get my C500 connected to the net via the PC's Bluetooth.

you can connect it to the internet by bluetooth too

both of these use Activesync as the driving force. If your phone is synced and set up properly (defaults usually work ok if you havent fiddled!) to access the internet "automatic" not by GPRS, then it usually just works

Things that can get in the way include firewalls. I suggest running zonealarm which will ask if you want activesync to allow a connection to the net. Most other firewalls just say "NO" in the background, not alerting you to anything, and leaving you wondering why on earth it isnt working.

..I think!

ok so lets do settings

1.) open active sync (on pc), tools, options, rules, and make sure passthrough rule is on internet.

2.) on the phone go to start, settings, data connections, and select everything there to automatic.

3.) on the phone go to start, internet explorer, menu, options, connections and select automatically detect settings.

All of this is free and runs off your internet on the pc.

If you r unsure what ure connecting with at that point just look at your signal status and if your using gprs (phone internet that costs) just stop the process or hold home then disconnect gprs.

Yes this will allow you to use msn and internet explorer on your home network
