Greetings! I am a Connex (Vodafone) customer. I used to have an old Siemens A50 that showed me the location where I was using the operator's service called (Connex Compass). To activate the service I had to enable channels and add the channel 50. It was a neat feature... especially when I was traveling outside town.

A while back, I bought the SPV C600 (fine piece of hardware). After unlocking and de-certing it I managed to switch from Orange to Vodafone. So, I naturally tried to get my beloved feature working again... but to my dissapointment, my current location wasn't displayed anywhere. So, I went about my bussiness with it. I am a software developer and recently I started tinkering with .net compact framework. In the CF2.0 SDK I stumbled accross something called CellBroadcast. I remembered my quest to get this feature working and started to dig a little deeper.

First I modified my homescreen to accept cell broadcast info (added the CellBroadcast plugin in the XML file). However, nothing happened, but after enabling channels and receive channel list and adding the 50 channel I noticed that the backlight on my phone is getting lighter from time to time... like the phone receives some info... but nothing is shown on the homescreen. This leads me to believe that the phone has hardware support for this. I looked again in the CF2 SDK and found out that CellBroadcast info is available in the registry - HKLM/System/State/Phone/CellBroadcast. Naturally I opened my registry editor and searched for this key. It wasn't present. I added myself as a string value and assigned it the value "a". To my surprise the homescreen now displays "a" under the clock - where I modified the xml to display the channel data. HOWEVER, nothing happens... it is stuck on "a" and the backlight gets stronger from time to time. I just don't get it... it should of worked!

It is my belief that Orange disabled this feature on purpose (since they don't offer this to customers). Notice how the enable channel checkbox gets disabled after reboot (also, the registry key created by me gets deleted). I am wondering if there is something else that I can do, or perhaps try another ROM version.

Please don't tell me about the cell-track project that gets the cell-id. With the help of this project I actually managed to get myself the cell-id in my own program. However, I want to make this channel thing work.

Thank you for any info you may have on this issue.

Come on... no one knows or cares about Channel Broadcast?

Why not, in Estonia every cell have name, and regular cellphones (nokia) shows the cell name (plac where you are). I have qtek 8310 and if i enable channel 050 i get SMS every time if cell change. So i get 13 SMS while i drive to work?? Its annoying and not necessary.

I to not find any solution to see the name of cell on display?

If only I could make my phone get SMSes when changing cells... I could write an application that intercepts those messages and does something with them (like displaying them on the homescreen silently).

Could you post the xml changes and the plugin?

The the plugin is made for SP2002/WM2003 – only MPx200? The SPV C600 and qtek 8310 uses WM 5.0 maybe that is the problem?

No, I don't think so. Read my first post - I am 100% sure that the OS and the hardware do support this feature. I am not, however, sure about the Orange ROM.

I've made some progress. After some digging on the msdn I managed to write a program in .net that gets the cellbroadcast string from the phone. Naturally... the string returned by my phone was empty... However, I want to know if I am on the right track with this, so please.... try this little program that I've uploaded, press Get and tell me if the textbox shows your current location. Don't forget to mention your phone model.

Don't forget to enable channels and to add channel 50 to the list. Also note that this program requires .net compact framework 2.0 installed. You can grab it from here - http://www.fightersoft.ro/downloads/NETCFv2.wm.armv4i.cab

Thanks for your help.

Damn... I'm sorry, I forgot to test the app and that was a mistake when working at late hours. In my previously uploaded file I called the wrong function that returned 45. That works on my phone too.

I've modified my post and uploaded the file that calls the correct function. Please try it again. You will either get your current location or an empty string (nothing).

The changelog from the I-mate AKU2 rom states:

Cell Broadcast display is now supported.

Anyone managed to get this working?

Works now ok for me with latest ROM.

You have this working on your Qtke 8310 with AKU2-rom?

Which homescreen are you using, and how is it being displayed?

Is it required to configure something?

I also have Qtek 8310 and want to confirm that channels are working with new AKU2 rom.

All you have to do is to activate it in Settings->Phone->Channels and add one channel number 50 (do not forget about some description - it must be present!)

I use 'wireless home screen' and broadcasted messages are displayed beetween profile name and sms info.

There is only one problem... battery... everytime the phone receives new message the LCD backlight turns on.

It doesnt work for me using Qtek 8310 with Aku2 ROM.

Nothing appears on home screen, i get a sms with cell name instead - very annoying.

Am i doing anything wrong? Ive tried all homescreens and also checked that plugin is present in Windows Default homescreen xml.

Yup.

When i enable channels, add channel 50 and give a description, i start to recieve sms with cell name every time i move to next cell, if i disable channels or remove channel 50 - no more sms

Elisa network in Estonia.

Point is that cell info works perfectyly with other phones. For example all Nokia phones i have had previously, i could always have cell info on screen, but not with that "not-so-smart-as-it-should-be" Qtek 8310...

Tried this on my Qtek 8310 (SP5 AKU2 rom) with an Orange, O2 and Vodafone UK sim - all failed except the Voda sim, which displayed my area code on the homescreen.

Shame Orange UK have disabled this.. I found it most useful when in Australia.

O2 use channel 200, Voda use channel 50 or 51, Orange i have no idea! and T-mobile don't support it.
