If your current phone is also a Smartphone, use Outlook to sync your contacts from your old device to your new one.

i thought that active sync was just for outlook contacts i.e my email addresses rather than my contacts on my phone

Nope, both. All your contacts from your phone will appear in Outlook as contacts. With or without phone numbers and/or email addresses, all info goes into Outlook where you can edit them conveniently and sync them back to your new phone.
