Guest mwille Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 Spoke to a Skype employee todayand just had to ask about a decent Skype version for our WIFI enabled Smartphones.. The answer wasn't very encouraging : They apparently have absolutely no development priority for Smartphone Skype.. Reason : Since current WIFI enabled devices have such lousy batterytime when WIFI is enabled Skype for this platform will hardly be used. (Good point about the batterylife though) So there it is.. This is of course just hearsay.. and this guy was no executive, but none the less his story makes sense somehow :)
Guest Ingvarr Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 (edited) Pardon my language, but "battery life" excuse is bulls*t Skyping over WiFi takes no more battery than ordinary GSM talking (in fact talking takes even more). You can skype for about 5 hours - is this "hardly used"? The real reason why they dont want to port Skype to Smartphone is that they fear that Smartphones will not be able to effectively act as P2P peers and wouldnt not route other calls efficiently due to poor resources. And exactly because smartphones are popular, putting Skype for smartphones will create another huge amount of clients hardly-capable-of-routing (clients that "would'nt share"), that could unbalance the P2P network and reduce usability. Guest mini_man Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 tht is crazy!! also im guessing some people would use there bluetooth active with it, like me as ive always thought that the microphone and speakers were terrible for a phone. seriously skype, people have used the ppc version on there smartphones all you need to do is create and f***** button so that we can do it withought usin the pc!
Guest Ingvarr Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 As I said the reason is not that they can not do it. The reason is that they dont want to do it. And it kinda justified, but its sorta technical, so they prefer just to avoid explaining it (or just do a "average joe user" explanation like "not enough CPU power" or "not enough battery life"). But real reasons is more complex than that.
Guest mini_man Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 (edited) has anyone emailed them showing that it is possible CMON 300TH POST!! 4 STAR DIE HARD!! Edited January 28, 2006 by mini_man
Guest Looby Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Maybe they are under pressure from the major Networks especially if Free Wi-Fi hotspots gather momentum worldwide :)
