best smartphone in germany

i just moved to germany from the US and ill be working here for a couple of years. I have my unlocked mpx220 with me, but i thought i could upgrade to a WM5 smartphone, or ppc phone. i would like to know what u think is the best smartphone and ppc phone available in germany. i would also like to get info on what service providor (vodafone, o2, tmobile) has the best services and coverage for smartphones. additionally, which carrier is it easiest to get unlocking information from? will they give me the code if i tell them i am 'travelling'? some carriers might be easier to get the unlock info from, then others, so please advice.
