What do all the timeouts mean?

I have a C550 and I'm a bit confused by all the timeouts there are. I have the following:

1. Settings - Home Screen - Timeout

2. Settings - Power Management - Backlight time out

3. Settings - Power Management - Display time out

I guess 2 is obvious but what do 1 and 3 do and what is the difference?

And while I'm here, is there a 'safe' key to press to get the screen back when the backlight goes off i.e. a key that doesn't do anything except cause the backlight to come back on. On my PC I use the key for this.
