Guest gunner17111972 Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Hello Folks... Got my new Orange spv m5000 a week ago, the ppc is fantastic, but something seems to be killing my battery... I leave for work, mess about with the phone during two 20 minute tea break and thats it, in an 8 hour shift at work leaves my battery critical or DEAD... Bluetooth is turned off.... wifi is turned off.... i always check that there are no running programs before returning to work.... Please help... The programs i have installed on the memory card are: Magic Button - PPod - Tcpmp player - Darxide EMP - Airborn RescueII - Anthelion - Arcade Challenge - Arkaball - Bears Job - Bubble Breaker - Diamond Mine - Fifa 2002 - Gamebox - Links - Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - Monoploy - Racing Days - Reckless Thief - Solitaire & Tetris. Like i said before... there are no programs running when i put the ppc into suspend mode so why is the battery dying? Thanks :x
Guest Confucious Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Have you turned off error reporting? That seems eat the battery and is turned on by default.
Guest gunner17111972 Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Yes.. error reporting is off... i fully charged it this morning, have looked at it about 4 times briefly but not used it... and my battery is now down to 47%... Sorry, the time is now 10pm, so i have lost over 50% battery life in the space of 12 hours with the unit on standby mode, bluetooth off, and nothing running. I installed beersofts battery monitor this morning and these are the read outs i have: battery: 46% fastest: 0d:0h:6m slowest: 0d:0h:15m average: 0d:2h:25m last: 0d:0h:8m current: 0d:0h:4m time running: 0d:9h:21m Could it have anything to to with the brand of memory card im using? Has anybody else had this problem, how did you resolve it? Thanks
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Welcome to the site :) I found my Jasjar to be poor on battery and it appears to be the actual radio stack that is draining the power which is to be expected to a certain extent. I was having similar battery life until I turned on flight mode, now my Jasjar seems to go on forever with the battery lasting well over a week. I know it's not the solution as you want to use the device as your phone but I thought you may be interested in what I found.
Guest gunner17111972 Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Thanks for your reply. If this is the case, i am totally gutted.... Contract is costing £55 a month for 600 minutes talktime free.... If i have to have flight mode turned on to save the battery, obviously cant use the phone. The specs on the phone and reviews all seem quite good for battery life... I'm just wondering if me and you (awarner) are having a similar problem but not necessarily a generic problem with this model. If anyone else has any info on this, please post... thanks
Guest Confucious Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 My Battery life is not good. Normally I charge the phone every night but a cou[le of weeks ago my sone was taken to hospital and although it had been charged the night before it ran out while I was there with him. Battery life is not good :)
Guest gunner17111972 Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Has anyone found the battery life to be good? If it is as rubbish across the board as i am starting to suspect, then the reviewers need shooting, and the companys need taking to court for mis-advertising... Maybe the radio rom (or whatever it is called) needs updating... Thanks
Guest Genieuk Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 If you have a computer handy nearby whilst at work, plug the sync cable in which also charges the phone. Mine seems to be ok. After I charge up fully I can get through about a day and a half to 2 days with light use of say IE with WiFi turned on and playing MP3's whilst on the tube for half an hour. If I use it quite a bit in a day, then I do have to charge it by the end of the day. In standby, I'm sure it lasts at least 4 days if I make/receive no calls. I think you may have a faulty battery? I myself charged the battery overnight when I first got it (even though I was very tempted to use it straight away). This is important on your first charge as it fully expands all the cells in the li-ion battery, after that you can charge as your like. If you don't initially charge it for a long period then the battery will sometimes not charge as much as it could have. Periodically, say once in 2 months, I would let it run down (not completely but close) and then do a full overnight charge.
Guest gunner17111972 Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 today i turned my screen brightness down to just 1 notch above off... this has helped a great deal as i still have about 45% left after a full day... There is a new extended battery being released for this model (m5000, exec etc) mid feb... it is apparantly a bit bigger and also comes with a new back cover... The cost is being shown as £25 (uk)..... think i shall get it on pre order... Is there any programs available to show what programs, utilities are using the most juice... :)
Guest Dave_UK Posted February 14, 2006 Report Posted February 14, 2006 One of the issues that plagued early 3G handsets was poor battery life - namely through switching dynamically between our 3G/2.5G network coverage. It is possible that you are in a poor 3G coverage area, or are travelling distances with the device that is causing it to constantly be updating its network status. I would recommend trying to lock the device into GSM (2.5G) mode. While this is of course going to reduce your data speeds (and remove the video calling capability, but I personally dont use it), it would be interesting to see if this improves your battery life significantly. Tap the 'antenna' icon on the Start bar. Tap 'settings' from the dropdown box. Choose 'band' pane from the bottom. Under 'Select your network type' choose 'GSM'. Tap 'OK' (top right). --> Handset should disconnect from the network and then recconnect to 'Orange' (not UMTS Orange for 3G). Cynics could point out that this removes a great plus point of the Universal (3G) but I'm sure we can all appreciate that the M5000 is a fantastic device for many more reasons than this. Even my 6630 I used to lock into 2.5G mode unless I really needed 3G data speeds - and Orange 3G coverage is second to none. Incidentally, Orange have recently launched the UK's first EDGE compatible network, which is supported by the M5000 and should mean enhanced data speeds in non-3G coverage. Finally, I can heartily reccommend the program 'XCPUScalar'. XCPUScalar is a program (v2.93 and above is WM5 compatible) that is designed to allow under/overclocking of the Xscale CPU in devices such as your M5000. It can be set to automatically adjust your speeds depending on CPU load - and thus saving you battery life when the device is idle. HOWEVER, as the developer clearly states - use it at your own risk. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice - I use to much 3G data to turn mine off (although that may change when they start charging me for it!) Interested in your comments on Edge - does the M5000 support it (I have an O2Exec but use it omn Orange - like you say their 3G coverage is great) have you seen http://www.modaco.com/HTC_Universal_and_EDGE-t236454.html - Having read this I was under the impression the M5000 did not support Edge - can yopu clarify this matter for us? Thanks for the info on XCPU Scalar - I'll have a look at that as well. :)
Guest gunner17111972 Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 I have now set the phone to gsm... hopefully this will help... i have had to resort to turning it off at work to save battery power... a bit annoying but it does the trick... Thanks for your comments and advice
Guest gunner17111972 Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Ok... the good news is that turning the 3g capabilities off will dramatically increase your battery life... Thanks folks for all your help :D :) :) :D
