I apologize if there has already been a topic like this started, but I wonder what the best web browser to use is. It of course needs to be windows mobile 5.0 compatible, and I am using a Cingular 2125 smartphone (it is an htc faraday). Pocket IE really sucks on it. I have used opera mini, which actually works a lot better than pocket IE and now I am using opera mobile 8.0 which is not actually listed for windows 5.0 yet. It seems to work real well and is literally at least 10 times faster than IE. I just wondered what everyone thought was the best browser to use, and I would really like to be able to save pics and stuff off of web pages, which I have seen my buddy do with opera 8.5 on his nokia 6682, but I can't do with this opera. Thanks for any help and/or suggestions guys.

I just got a Cingular 2125 this week. I've been using Opera mobile 8, which was recently released with official support for WM5. On my MPX 220 last week, I was using Opera Mini (the Java based one). Opera mobile is a bit faster than Opera mini, about 5x faster than pocket IE, and has the ability to display full screen and re-size the text much smaller to take advantage of high resolution screens. Opera mini is free, however, and Opera mobile is about $20USD.

My problem with Opera mobile is a lack of any type of settings menu. I cannot change the home page, the cache location/size, anything. I am going to try installing Opera on my storage card tonight to see if it stores the cache there instead, but I will loose all my favorites I spent an hour putting in >:)? I want a FireFox port for WM5!!

On the Opera website they only show support for WM5 PPC, not SP's... So i'm assuming that you download the SP 2003 client, but i'm wondering for which phone you downloaded. I have the 2125 as well, so thats why im curious...

Thanks...

I am currently using opera mobile for windows smartphone 2003, I downloaded the generic one that said "all smartphone". Although for the 2125, im wondering if maybe I should have gotten the audiovox smt5600 one, which was the predecessor to the 2125. It works well, I wish I could save images off of websites and download pdf's or doc's and stuff also (since I have clearvue which can read those). And I know in opera 8.5 for s60 you can do that stuff, so I am anxiously awaiting the update for smartphones

I guess I am using the Smartphone 2003 version - could have sworn I heard it was out for WM5 now. Maybe it was just an internal beta released for WM5 I heard of. In any case, this version works beatifully on my 2125, except for the lack of a general options menu as I mentioned.

I just went to the smartphone page, clicked 'download trial', then clicked All Devices (only other options were Orange certified and Verizon certified). You might be talking about Opera mini - that's the Java version avalable (it has phone selection menu's with Audiovox and etc) - for that version, when I tried it, I chose the generic 'all phones' one). The Java version is more polished and a bit easier ot use at the moment (pending an update to Opera Mobile 8.0), but I found the non-java one to be faster, and it allowed full screen browsing.

How can you save images? I had to browse to the cache directory to grab images. Are you talking about Mobile 8 or Mini (the Java one)?

I was saying that I used my buddy's nokia 6682 (which is series 60 symbian) and he had opera 8.5. It could save images just by clicking on them and having "save" (or "download") as an option, it was nice

I would assume that opera is probably the best for you too, I just really wish they would release a new one... there are a few bugs that ive noticed in windows mobile 5 (Idunno if that is what your imate uses though)

Yeah his SP5m is WM5 too - if you were asking which version, the smartphone WM 2003 version of Opera mobile, or the universal advanced midlet version of the mini (java) one should work, worked ifne for me (we all basically have the same phones, plus or minus wifi and memory size).

Yeah, they've been updating their PC version of Opera this month, and jsut released the 'mini' java version, so hopefully the mobile version 8.0 (or 9.0 if it would matc hthe new PC version being released) is next :). I'm not going to pay the $20 until they update it, too worried they might charge again...
