Guest wmason Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Hi, I am trying to connect to my router at home via the Wifi..... Every has set up ok, the WPA key etc, and once I was actually connected for a couple of seconds.. I have added the MAC address into my MAC address filtering on the router. But my routrer has DHCP disabled. All PC's connect to my router via fixed IP Address. How can I give the SP5 a fixed IP address, gateway etc so it can connect to my router? Thanks for any help...

Guest shadamehr Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 (edited) This is exactly what I do. All my PC's have manually Assigned local IP addresses (which is I assume, what you mean mate). But my router is still setup to provide DHCP etc. And when my two sp5's connect, they are simply given the next available number up the range. You COULD have a problem though, if the sp5 is given the next IP address in the list, when a certain PC is switched of, and then you switch that PC on, and it tries to use its own already taken, IP address. So far, this has never happened to me though, as it is rare my later numbered PC's are on at the same time/before the sp5 is. Edited February 5, 2006 by shadamehr

Guest Samsonite Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 fixed IP SIMS are a nightmare to sort out. I dont know anywhere near enough about the router settings to sort this out so i leave that to others... You can get a fixed IP on a sim but the route through your networks customer services to get it is a task in itself. Your best bet is to perservere with a business advisor on the relevant network to sort you out. Make sure it is an address visible outside of the network tho - in a normal GPRS attachment, the IP given to the terminal (your phone) will be an network internal IP. AFAIK, you couldnt ping it from the web.... We do data only GPRS SIM cards for a GSM modem we sell at work and supply all of this... things is, it wont work with a voice call!! We also do a fullyroaming, country, network card too!! Any network in the UK! Basically, if you have anyones coverage, you will get a connection!! but again, it wont work with voice!! so not the answer per se, but proves you can get fixed IP... not that anyone said you couldn't!

You see, he specifically said sp5... So what he is referring to, is the sp5's ability to utilise wi-fi - it's built into the phone. So none of it was about SIM IP addresses via OTA (i.e. network/gsm) based internet access mate. But rather, the phone's ability to connect via wi-fi (hence his mention of his home router), to the internet. Specifically, he was asking about how to manually configure the phone to have a specific local IP address on his home network - a feature which is actually lacking in the phone's wi-fi settings. So kudos to you for the heads up about SIM IP addresses. But if I am right, it's not related to what he was asking - just in case he reads it and gets confused. *********************************************************** @ ElGato: I assume that would involve going into my router settings via its web interface, and fiddling with the settings somewhere. If so I will have a look as it's a new one on me - cheers. EDIT: just had a look and found the DHCP assignment range - my worry was, that by setting it to xxx.xxx.xxx.16 (my PC's are 11-15) that my PC's would no longer connect. I never realised or thought to think that the DHCP assigned number range ONLY needs to relate to those not set for a manual local IP their end. Sure enough, setting it to xxx.xxx.xxx.16 meant that my PC's continue to work, but the phone only gets the 16 and upwards address, even if only PC's 11 and 12 are running - in other words, it doesn't take up number 13, and then cause problems if PC 13 was switched on after this. So MANY thanks mate, for hinting at this course of action for me! Edited February 5, 2006 by shadamehr
