O2 Germany have released the XDA Smartphone.

post-12251-1139737078_thumb.gif

The phone appears to be an HTC Hurricane (same as the Orange C550) but with one big difference that the OS Windows Mobile 5.0 and not 2003SE

I wish we had this here in the Philippines... :)

All the specifications are the same as the C550 apart from the OS, but why release this handset when the next generation of HTC smartphones are freely available and have been for a while?

For more information (for those who can read German), visit the O2 page HERE/

Now for the next big question, will Orange ever release the WM5 on the C550? as the pressure from the competition is certainly hotting up.

Thanks peekie for the info! 8)

You make it sound like it's newly out, it's been out a while, and as for being a c550 / hurricane, I don't think it is. I remember posting this a while back - around the same time that I mentioned o2.de's minty blue XDA the end of november but the post's gone - the specs on handit.de quote an Omap 850 which would make it a Faraday.

http://www.handit.de/index.php?fuseaction=...&produktid=3075

according to this:

http://www.modaco.com/HTC_Hurricane_SPV_C5...II-t228592.html

Hurricane is an omap 750.

So no upgrade path for c550 possible. But we've already discussed this?

Its doubtful Orange will release a WM5 update for the C500.

However, I'm betting it'll only be a matter of time before someone has dumped this o2 xda smartphone ROM and changed the hex for the C500 :)

I think you mean c550, there is a leaked wm5 c500 rom already. Not too sure if this o2 phone's rm will port accross - from the specs it looks a different processor, albeit same family.

It's one I think I missed :?

I wonder how popular this is as I'm not sure I have seen any posts from owners of this model.

Can't see Orange realeasing WM5 for C550. May have been a different story if o2 released this in the UK mind.

Ive been wanting to recolour my c550 to stone grey or black and this is edging me more

Right, done lots of digging and think I've got to the route of the confusion.

Seems the XDA Phone from O2 does indeed have the OMAP 850 and is commonly held to be another incarnation of the HTC Tornado (same as the SP5/C600)...

...SO... no hope for the Hurricane owners who wanted WM5 there (there's no evidence a Tornado rom could work on a Hurricane).

dont understand why they are copying the orange C550 style. its all about copying these days and branding....

According to posts writern on german smartphone forums the phone came out first via the internet shop around end November and mid January in the shops , as far as news goes it may have slipped though the net but for modaco members it is nice to know about this phone , seeing as it has not been covered yet by other English language smartphone sites it is news to our members :)

The discussion over the C550 having a wm5 has been talked about but orange have been looking into it and testing a rom on the C550 so there maybe hope for C550 owners maybe not in the uk but in europe :D

The 'Tornado Tempo' was mentioned on Modaco as far back as beginning of november.

And I thought it was only 'msmobiles' that recycled old stories as news :)

Only kidding. Still can't find the post I made originally with handit's processor spec back then? IIRC it was McWarre that posted the pic of the phone. Or maybe I'm imagining it?...

It's not an "old" story if the shops have only just started selling it.

Handit.de have had it available since I first noticed it on their site in November - it isn't coming to the UK AFAIK so there is no 'news' :)

Handit.de also have a physical shop as well as online sales. Never been though.

The topic is discussing the fact that O2 are now selling in their highstreet shops

now. Rather than just online, this means that hopefully the device will become

more popular.

Modaco is not just uk based it has members the world over , there will be times when a news story covers a phone that is say only out in the US , and that does not mean modaco will not cover it .

If you look alot of members have Orange phones in countrys that do not have orange , and that comes from reading about a phone on sites like this , maybe o2 will not bring this phone to the uk but it does not mean no one will never get one in the uk :)

It was in the german flyer for o2 with the i300 in I had ages ago from an o2 shop in Gelsenkirchen I think - I'll see if I can dig it out. Offline price was *silly* - something like €499!

No mention of highstreet shops in the first post, has anyone seen them in a highstreet shop in Germany? - first post is just a link to the online shop...(a nice edit mentioning the higher spec processor though.)

Has anyone found *official* specs confirming the processor or are we reyling on other sites?

Yes I agree, except there is no 'news'! It was previously covered on modaco....not only with the link I gave but also a link to the online shop - my point was that it would only be news if it had also been launched in other terratories, which it hasn't, and the link given has been live for a few months.

The original post stated

"All the specifications are the same as the C550 apart from the OS, but why release this handset when the next generation of HTC smartphones are freely available and have been for a while?"

which they are not as the processor is different, and implying that this phone is newly out and o2 have made a mistake launching an 'old' phone when it's actually been out a while ( 3 months?) and on specs is actually fairly uptodate and a deriviative of another current HTC model.

check www.spv-developers.com

It's a omap 750 ==> same as c550

No new info, same old sources quoted and generalisations made, no tech specs....anyone actually got one of these yet?

Yep, as Fluffcat1 points out and SPV-Developers have since acknowledged, it's based on the HTC Tornado NOT the HTC Hurricane and so has the newer OMAP 850 processor.

Everyone says that it is impossible to get a rom from this phone on a Hurricane unit.. And i actually don't se why.. The phone it self is the same, except from the processor and the OS.. The only driver that would be needed to be replaced is the one for the CPU and is that impossible? Iam not going to try it though, cause i think its illegal.. IS it illegal ?

Oh, you 'don't see why', so it must be possible eh? ;)

Have you had a tornado and a hurricane apart? Have you examined the differences to the board, the different chips used and their relative locations? No? Until you have, don't make statements such as : 'the phone itself is the same' as you don't know what you're talking about.

The Internet. Everyone's an expert.....

( I think I'll make that my new sig )
