Guest vodkagirl001 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Well since I posted a couple a queries on the M500 im on a roll so watch out. Ive done a search but im either a crap searcher OR the answer im looking for isnt there lol So is the memory on the M500 really as bad as mine seems to be, I can't take pictures as it said ''not enough memory to save image'' so I have now changed it to save straight to my storage card, I also constantly get messages when im on the internet on it *(not downloading anything) saying to many applications running and displayes a list for me to close some programmes (sometime 'phone' is displayed twice) and most of the times barley anything is showing (maybe IE, Jawbreaker and File Exp or something) I have virtually NOTHING installed which is the annoying thing!! All my images are on the storage card. I as of yet have no today screen plug ins etc. I installed one game (tetris @ 43B), ADBWeatherPlus @ 67B, 3 full MP3 Songs @ 4.19M and 4.23M and 1.37m and a 7 mp3 clipets of about 300-500k each. I cant put the tunes on SD cause then I cant use them as tones. So it is normal to have no memoey with only the above on the PPC? If I go in to the Memory function it says TOTAL MAIN MEMORY 57.41MB then on the Scale on the Storage side it says ALLOCATED 39.11MB, USED 28.03MB Free 11.08MB and on the Programmes side ALLOCATED: 18.30MB, USED 12.96MB FREE 5.34MB IS this normal, how much space would I expect to free if I did the hard / soft reset trick and deleted some of the orange Apps (FYI I may delete the wrong things here lol) Cheers for any replies
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 Yeah, that sounds about right If you do the "out of the box" installation on an M500 it leaves you with almost no memory to play with. The way the "memory" works is that there is one pile of memory and you can choose how much of that to use "disk space" (for storing files) and how much to use for "memory" (for running apps). Because the standard Orange build (and T-Mobile on their version FWIW) installs mountains of rubbish into the "disk space" it leaves little or nothing left for "memory". Hard/Soft Reset will give you back that memory, but make sure you're comfortable with the whole process before you start - you dont want to get half way through and think "eh? what's that then?" If things get really bad you can always Hard Reset and get it back to how Orange wanted you to have it. It's not doing anything irreversable. Before you do it: 1) Work out what apps you want (for instance do you need Acrobat or PowerPoint readers?) 2) Work out which CAB installs the apps you want to keep (that's all covered in some depth elsewhere) 3) Sync or backup your Contacts etc etc 4) Move any important/unique files, ringtones etc to the SD card One other thing to consider: Whilst Orange support/advice for your phone is almost non-existent as it is, after a Hard/Soft Reset it will disappear altogether.
Guest exosceleton Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 (edited) i had mem problems too. did a hard reset, and restored eveything as is was before. same programs, same messages, same contacts, same files(doc-jpg). mem use for the storage in use went from 28 before to 11 after, so there was something hogging mem before. still dont know what it was. Guest chucky.egg Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 What you can find is that the IE cache can grow huge, way past what the Registry limit is set to. The default path is \Windows\Profiles\Guest\Temporary Internet Files You can safely delete the entire contents of that folder
Guest exosceleton Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 i'll keep my eye on that folder. I did not think it stored that much temp internet files, since whenever i tap the back button in IE, it has to retrieve the last page again from the internet.
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 On WM2003 it certainly stores masses of junk It caught me out - using in excess of 20Mb that I only discovered by chance. I haven't noticed a problem on WM5, but there's more storage space there so perhaps it's still doing it.
Guest fraser Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 I concur, my IE cache regularly fills up, even with browsing "lite" pda websites. Emails with attachments is the other thing I find to chew up loads of space. I have Sprite Backup and it comes with a great util called "Space Detective" which is a file-explorer view of the phone, but with the total size next to each folder. Very handy for finding where it is hiding!
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 Very handy indeed, but for some reason not included in the new version of Sprite (or, not the version I have at any rate)
Guest vodkagirl001 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 OK well cheers guys Ill try and search and find the info on the soft/hard reset, back up what I need (there is nothing really on it tbh) then try that! Hope it works as its really annoying! Oh I also deleted all the files in the temp profile folder you suggested and although the were loads so im glad I could find and delete them lol, not much space freed up, but such is life! LOL
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Hard/Soft Reset "trick": 1. Backup all your data. Everything on the phone (but not the SD card) will be wiped. 2. Hard Reset 3. Screen alignment, time zone etc 4. Once all basic settings are done Today screen loads and says something along the lines of "Auto setup continues in 3 seconds". Do a Soft Reset before it continues 5. Install the bits you want from the Extended_ROM folder now visible on the phone Don't forget the backup!
Guest vodkagirl001 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Cheers Fella, thats a great help. I will have to have a look and see if I can fatham out from the Extended Rom what I do and Dont want!! I mean, I dont use the pp vies thing and the orange help (inface anything orange seen as im running on O2) If I do mess anything up (should be ok as long as I dont have Easties on and get involved in it lol but you never know!), will a straight hard reset put it back to standard like when I got it?
Guest chucky.egg Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Yeah, a regular Hard Reset puts it back to "straight out of the box" condition
