Hi there,

There are a lot of guides out there for converting DVD into DivX (MPEG4). I use SimpleDivX which takes the movie straight from the DVD and puts it into an AVI file. A guide on how to do this can be found here: http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/49/59/

There are a few things you'll have to download and install on your PC:

SimpleDivX: http://www.simpledivx.org/main/

Lame MP3 Codec: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm

When using the guide above, just remember to set the width to "320" and not "640" as shown in the guide. This will set it to the correct resolution for a QVGA Pocket PC device like the Vario. Have a play with it and if you get stuck, there are a lot more tips and tutorials at Video Help: http://www.dvdrhelp.com

Have fun! :)

I find Lathe plus TCPMP works wonders. A full episode of a 45min TV program will be around 90Mb with Lathe's default settings, and look as good as a file three or more times the size.

Well worth a look.

Engadget review - here

Lathe ($4.95) - here

TCPMP (free) - here

I used to use Smartmovie on a UIQ platform, is it available for PPC?

There's a great progam called Handbrake around which will convert your DVDs into suitable .avi files - I used a rate of about 3Mb/min, and it looked pretty good and was also fairly smooth.

It's mainly a Mac application, but there is a Windows beta, I believe.
