Aren't they illegal here

probably but i dont think it is if you order the ones that transmit on the band i mentioned.

i dont see why they are illegal because they will never overpower radio stations because they are so small

Not seeing it doesn't alter the fact that they are under the wireless telegraphy act. You're broadcasting. Yes, it's a limited range, but you're still using the public FM band. Proprietary frequencies are OK but then you'd need a dedicated receiver and not just an FM radio.

Of course, they've got to catch you using it, and by the nature of it's short range I doubt they'd ever detect it - ownership of a device is legal (afaik) in the UK, using one is not :)

Other countries wireless' acts may differ. Eg:France, where mere possession of a radar detector in your car is subject to an on-the-spot fine even if dissconnected

The FM transmitters are powered by 2xAAA batteries. Anybody know how much battery life you can expect with typical useage of say 2 hours/day?

I know you can power using car cigarette lighter but then it gets more messier than the cassette adapter solution I am presently using anyway.

Thanks

I'm actually thinking of the same thing ... here are the solutions I came up with

1. Use FM Transmitter, there's this great one that just plugs in your cigarette lighter socket and a little wire comes out of it from the side that (after converting from 3.5mm to 2.5mm) plugs into your SP5(m) even better yet, it has a little USB socket that you can use to power your SP5(m). Awesome if you're streaming audio. You can also use the USB port to plug in a Flash drive and it will play your MP3s for you

2. Same as above BUT this little FM modulator actually works on the antenna line. Antenna line plugs into it, and a little wire connects to yourPhone. Good, but you still need to worry about powering your device. Quality is better than those battery powered FM Transmitters but I would rate it at *** [baterry powered ones * to **] same as casette option

3. Directly connecting your SP5 to Aux input jack if you have one, If you don't there are many companies that are doing Aux input devices to head units. Quality **** to ***** (but you worry about powering your device separately)

4. Some new head units have bluetooth with them, now couple that with A2DP and now you have excellent wireless digital broadcasting with no loss. Quality *****. Again you have to worry about providing power to your device

5. Combination of the above. Bluetooth to a bluetooth reciever device that outputs to Aux input. Quality is also **** to *****

Dreaming:

Something like the speaker box that plugs into the cigarette lighter to provide power to the phone, and is already connected (bluetooth or otherwise) to the headunit. Power the device, provide speaker phone functionality, hold the phone and can play the audio. If someone could just make that for all of us ... would be a killer app!

Oh also add a big display and huge buttons to display song information and interact with the phone
