Wifi is a BIG drain on Battery

Hi,

Finally got a Wifi Dongle for my PC and set up a peer to peer connection with my JAMin so I can use my Broadband connection anywhere in the house. I had used a BT connection but it conflicted with my GPS unit so it was a pain to keep deleting and recreating the connections.

It works really well and the browsing speeds are excellent. It is a slight pain having to set "This network conntects to the internet" setting every time before using the private network (does any one know why it does not remember this setting?) but it only takes a few seconds to do.

However, it really does eat the batteries. For the first time since I have had my JAMin it got below 50%. Not a big deal for me as I can charge the phone as I use it but it must be pain if you are out and about.

I was wondering how using that slider thing in Wifi set up to conserve battery power affects the performance?

On a related note I am aware of how the whole Hot Spot thing works in public areas and that some are free and some cost to use. I was wondering, however, if you can tell the difference when connecting between an unprotected private network (say in someones house) verses a legitimate free access point?

It is technically an offence in the UK to use a network without the owners consent so I don't want to fall foul of the boys & girls in blue.

Thanks

Can you supply more details on this one?

Hi,

Here is a link to news story on someone convicted of this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4721723.stm .

I think it comes under Section 125 of the Communications Act 2003 which creates an offence to dishonestly obtain electronic communications services.

This would cover the whole wardriving thing.

Regards
