Guest andysalmon Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 Hi All, I have previously installed AS 4.1 and was using it with no problems with my Compact (2003SE) and connected up the Vario and all went well it was recognised etc but then just hung whilst synching. Zonealarm did not ask if I wanted to grant access but that's already granted in any case. If I close Zonealarm it syncs fine, but that's a bit of a pain in the bum. Anyone come across this before and how do I overcome this problem?
Guest Tech Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 try removing the rule and see what happens - havent used zone alarm but there will be a rule where you can remove the activesync entry, next time you connect to activesync hopefully ZA will pick it up properly and ask you what to do.

Here is the link MS ActiveSync Troubleshooting Page Good luck!
Guest andysalmon Posted February 26, 2006 Report Posted February 26, 2006 Thanks for trying, but so far no luck. Anyone else? It's baffling that the move from 2003SE to 5 has confused it so much!

I solved it by removing then reinstalling ZoneAlarm. Bit of a pain, as it means re-training ZoneAlarm for all the internet apps, but may well fix the problem.

Whilst checking for programs in the background via a task manager I see that activesync is often running even though it hasn't been used. Seems fairly strange.
Guest andysalmon Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Ok, I haven't cured it but have narrowed it down. Uninstalled ZA and installed Kerio firewall and had exactly the same problem. Reinstalled AS 4.1 (Again!) with same problem, interestingly my Compact syncs without issue and when I have disabled the Kerio to sync the Vario, the Compact is literally 3 times faster when syncing. I can only conclude that the Vario is at fault somehow. Can someoone please post their registry settings for AS?

I had a similar problem, although I use Sygate Personal Firewall on W2k. It lists the registry changes I made. Link here.
Guest jiffk Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 omg how rubbish is active sync, and they've still not released an update. I cant get my vario to sync at all. After boot i have to set up new sync settings then it just hangs on looking for changes I had to unistall 4.1 and install 4.0 becuase the 4.1 install wouldnt finish. Tried disabling the windows firewall on the lan interface that active sync creates but that didnt help. The only activity i get is when i unplug the dam thing it asks if i want to combine files on the device or replce etc ...arghhhhhh anyone got any advice?
Guest andysalmon Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Those registry hacks didn't work- for me. I'm convinced it's a WM5 issue, so any more hacks would be appreciated.
Guest Noo Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Don't know if this will be any help to anybody. I was active-sync'ing fine, via a USB hub which was plugged into a USB1.1 port. Recently bought a PCMCIA USB2.0 card which I plugged the hub into and yesterday noticed (having not sync'ed since) that active-sync was impossible, with it recognising, trying to sync then self disconnecting. After much frustration I plugged into the now free USB1.1 port and it sync fine. Plugged directly into the USB2.0 PCMCIA card and it sync'd fine. For some reason, the hub via the USB2.0 PCMCIA wasn't happy. May help somebody...
