Guest thenext1 Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 (edited) I hate this phone!!!!   Yesterday, it happened again! Something I don't know of, has totally screwed up my i-mate SP5M a second time...   It has become unable to open and change any settings in the Setting screen, even the ring profile! I'm stuck in "Normal" profile. It doesn't work even from the power button! It can still make calls, but dunno if it can recieve. Because of **I_dont_know_what**, now I have to hard reset the phone another time  arrrghh!!!! I realy DON'T GET what I'm doing wrong!! The last thing I did is to setup a PPC application on the PC (worms world party), and I've interrupted the CAB transfer to the phone before he could even start. Now, the reboot after I discovered the problem, the phone displayed "Unable to install Jamdat Worms World Party" well... I DIDN'T ASK YOU TO DO SO!!! And here comes the big question. It's unacceptable that I have to HR the phone every time for a cabfile that threatens me when I install in the PC (because active sync acts up his own decision)!!!!!! There MUST be a way, using a reg editor or anything, to STOP the device searchin for this CAB file... help me!!! And yet I don't get why it almost totally stops functioning for stupid recoverable errors like these... Come on no-one has experienced this??? I find it RIDICULOUS!!! EDIT : cleaned up in case thenext1's mother reads this :) Edited February 27, 2006 by Disco Stu
Guest Disco Stu Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 I've not done this mysef but isn't the trick to run the installer when the phone is not connected to the PC ? The cab file is created but cannot be transferred and the installation stops. I presume that you then find the cab file and do whatever is necessary to stop the installation restarting when you next connect the phone.
Guest pedroms1 Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 To stop the phone to try to install the cab each time you reset it, go to Windows>Start Menu and delete an entry that says something about manager. It happened to me, and thats how Ive managed to make it stop reinstalling it, althought I've never had those problems. Pedro
Guest Will Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 open activesync when device connected, select add/remove programs in tools (in activesync) select worms world party, click uninstall. should then clean all off.. should!

The cab file is created but cannot be transferred and the installation stops. I presume that you then find the cab file and do whatever is necessary to stop the installation restarting when you next connect the phone. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I mentioned the installation as the only possible source of troubles, I have no evidence of it being the problem. And when I open Settings->Remove programs I get an empty list... all other setting screens do not open and crash with this error: "Unable to open settings". To stop the phone to try to install the cab each time you reset it, go to Windows>Start Menu and delete an entry that says something about manager.what do you mean? in the phone? In the windows->start menu i've got only useful items containing "manager": comm manager, task manager, file manager, etc ... all LNK files. If you meant windows->startup, well i've got nothing in that folder. And Yes, the options are set to show hidden/system/rom files. open activesync when device connected, select add/remove programs in tools (in activesync) select worms world party, click uninstall. should then clean all off.. I'm trying this evening, but I don't think it will show up/it will work. Last time it happened, Active Sync had given errors while synchronizing. AT LEAST and fortunately I can access file system and back up contacts and messages. Thank you for all the posts, but my intention was primarily focused to find the problem at its roots! Frankly, if I need to stay 100% of the time allerted on what my phone does when activesynced, or if installing (not even RUNNING!!!) a might-be-incompatible application, could cause such a destructive and unrecoverable damage to the OS forcing you to hassle and lose 1/2 day to hard reset and restore your data, accounts, settings, etc.... Not even a 10-year-old low-level potentialli dangerous driver, but a stupid game... It seems like windows (or perhaps this ROM version, I hope!!!) it's like a soap bubble when coming to stability. One cannot even experiment a little bit with his phone, should strictly attain to signed and trusted applications ](*,) Anyway: The first time it happened I copied Worms World Party demo CAB on the internal memory and ran it... it failed, and bye bye windows... Now I've installed the WWP for pocketpc CAB in the pc, extracted the files, manually copied them in the phone and ran the executable, and a few minutes later I discovered the same symptoms... Really not acceptable as a behavior. I would be very grateful if anyone (maybe with an already broken OS in his sp5m) tries to install these programs. For the sake of knowledge. I'm actually really surprised that no one has struck into my problems.
Guest thenext1 Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 open activesync when device connected, select add/remove programs in tools (in activesync) select worms world party, click uninstall. should then clean all off.. 1) when connect the phone, activesync says synchronization failed 2) it displays only some of the installed programs 3) when I click to remove the program, and after confirming the action, the dialog shuts down without doing nothing in the phone I think it's a problem related to activesync or cab manager in the phone. I just NEED to know where is all the information stored in the registry/file system. p.s. I Know what you are thinking, that I've got a virus or I've installed a virus or I've installed a dangerous app.... Nope, I DID NOTHING  If I hard reset i'm extra SURE it will happen again!
Guest Will Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 2 steps, first delete all partnerships from activesync, and retry. then if that don't work: Remove and reinstall activesync, (if you have not already done this) - i would also then hard reset the device. Good Luck

Good Luck <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've deleted all the partnerships in the PC and the phone, but anyway when I connect it, just after the jingle, it says error and to disconnect and reconnect the cable. I won't reinstall activesync/PC because it's obviously not the problem. The problem is in the phone. I will however HR the device because I need the phone at full spec, not chopped down to 20%....
Guest gacajun Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I can't speak to your activesync problems but a PPC app does not normally run on a smartphone, different OS. I have tried this before and have either had an error message stating that the program was not compatible with my phone or it crashed and I had to power cycle the phone. I have not had the level of problems that you have had though. Good luck in your quest for the root source of the problem, I'll be monitoring this thread.

Guest thenext1 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Go to this directory on your PC and delete the JAMDAT folder or anything related to Worms World Party... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I've already deleted that folder. It all has to do with activesync and/or the cab manager. I cannot explain myself else, why all settings screen crash, and why activesync fails on startup. I'm asking you for a clue, i.e. locations in the registry (where windows stores CAB whereabouts), possible source of problems, etc... With such a compromised phone, before HRing i'll experiment a bit if I can avoid it the next time. However I would also like to know if i-mate, HTC or everyone else has got emails for reporting these bugs. They surely cannot discover all the bugs by themselves... p.s. my ROM version is obviously the last one.
Guest Will Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I won't reinstall activesync/PC because it's obviously not the problem. this is your choice, but from what i can see you have hard reset the device (clearing out registry settings, errors etc) and when syncing up again you get the error? hard reset of phone, then reinstall activesync, should give a base to 'replicate' the issue, or will solve the issue.. Sorry if i'm shooting in the dark, but this is how i would troubleshoot/fix.

If I reset the phone all these problems go away, but firstly I want to ask your opinion and try possible resolutions. Resetting the phone is only a momentary solution, I'm 100% sure i'll strike into this problem again, it's so easy to do the wrong thing with this phone. Come on anyone else's not experienced this problem? May be others refer it only as Activesyncing problems, but in reality it's a deeper problems involving the majority of OS functions...
Guest pedroms1 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 (edited) Men, today it happened the same, when I went to settings it only opened "folders" like connections, but inside connections it couldn't open anything, and the rest inside settings didnt open also. To solve that I went again to Windows>Startup and deleted the App___.lnk (I dont remember the rest) or something starting with wce___.lnk. Use Resco Explorer 2003, and make sure that its enabled to see all files. Is will solve your problems. (this happens to me a lot of times 'cause im always trying ppc apps). Pedro <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I cannot try Resco Explorer now because i'm at work and I must install it :) But both Smart Explorer and the integrated file manager (the last one is set to hide nothing) show the Windows->startup folder empty! However how do I install the resco file manager with that crippled phone? I'll need to extract the files and manually run it...... I'm a bit run out of hope... I don't think it will solve... has Resco got any magic in their program?
Guest thenext1 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 pedroms1, I've tried to install Resco Explorer, but the CAB installation fails before the selection of the destination directory (this is one of the side effects of the "illness"). I've then tried to extract all the files in the PC with WinCE cab manager (a demo app) and copied them in the phone, but the program cannot start because of a certificate error. :) But wasn't my phone application unlocked? I've followed the guide found in a sticky post in this forum (regeditstg + sda_application_unlock) and I thought it was app-unlock.... So I've not managed to run Resco phone browser. But I stress the point that neither smart explorer nor the file browser show any file in the StartUp directory     Things are going really bad now, i've got no application opened and 20mb free ram, yet the device says insufficient memory even for opening an image..... I'll reset now, i'm already very tired of this phone
Guest pedroms1 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 If you havent already reseted your phone, there's a last thing you can try, and may work: install binary's SP Task Manager with WinCE, and copy it. when you can oppen it, set it to NOT hide system apps, and close all the apps named "WCE*something*.exe" With this you should be able to install other progs. After that, go see if that file appears on Windows>startup If nothing happens, just hard reset it. If you've already hard reseted it, the topic stays here for the next time it happens

Now I've lost the startmenu background image :?: ... i'd be glad if you send me.... I hope I won't have to write in this thread again! But as I couldn't learn the lesson, because I don't know exactly what I did wrong, it will happen again!! IM SURE!!! Oh well and now back to the phone
Guest thenext1 Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Yesterday happened a strange thing! I installed Opera for smartphone 2003 (following another users' advice) and the installation went ok. It was working. Today I switched on the phone and was greeted with the dreaded message! "The Opera Mobile installation was not completed." But LUCKILY all is still working: settings ok, remove programs ok...... HOW COME???????????
