Hi,

I have a gmail (googlemail) account. Google have just optimised their site for accessing the gmail accounts from a smartphone and this is very useful, however what I am looking for is a gmail notifier program to tell me when I have new mail.

I don't want to setup an email account using the built in text / email functionality, what I am looking for a is ane app that starts up with thphone and polls my gmail account every x mins and alerts me when I have a new mail - very much like the gmail notifier extention that plugs in to a PC based Firefox browser?

Does anyone know of such an app or are there any willing candidates looking for an idea to develop???

Thanks

Mark

Dont know if anything like this exists for the Smartphone as yet - what we need is a google talk software to be able to run on smartphone that can give the email notifications as it does on the pc.

you could potentially set up an account on the phone to check every 15 minutes via pop, and just download the headers (ie. not much bandwidth).

Personally, I get my mail (first 50k) popped to my phone every 15 minutes and LOVE it.

This is what I didn't want to do as I didn't want to have to download even the headers. The GPRS cost doesn't bother me, all I wanted was to be notified when I have a least one email waiting, so that it prompts me to check the gmail mobile site.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for your input skisteven1

I have a slight "cludge" if this is of any help.

It depends upon you being on Orange.

If you have an Orange phone, you can open up an Orange email account. These accounts can be set to send a SMS telling you that email has arrived.

So, set Gmail to forward to your Orange account, Orange sends you a free text saying "New email" and you hit the GMail account to retrieve it.

Every few weeks/days, you clear your Orange email account.

Not elegant, but it works...................if you are on Orange. The system may work with other providers as well.
