Disabling GPRS

Recommended Posts

I've been playing with my new Vario with a Pay as You Go SIM before I start my contract next month. I've been using Wireless a lot but I'm alarmed that the phone defaults to GPRS when signal is low.

Admittedly, I was getting used to my new toy, but I do think the "You are about to go online" message ambiguous; I've gone through nearly a tenners credit in 2 days! I'm not going to be on Web n Walk and I'm only planning to buy a couple of MB per month.

Anyone got any tips to stop me getting huge bills via unwanted GPRS use?

Thanks

If you don't need to ever use GPRS then just delete the connection in Settings-Connections. Rather crude way of doing it though

Thanks for your reply, you're right though, it does seem a bit extreme, as I may want to use GPRS when I can't get to a Wireless Hotspot - we're blessed here in Brighton with free wireless on the beach, roll-on summer!

Are there any other options? - I was thinking I could change the settings slightly so I could reactivate the GPRS when I needed it. Any ideas?

Thanks

I have my Vario set to connect to "My Work Network" in connection settings. Therefore, if I attempt to go online it will simply say can't connect if i don't have wifi on and connected to a network. If I really need to use GPRS (which tends to be very rarely since theres usually an unprotected network nearby :) ) I just go in to settings, connections, advanced, select networks and switch to "T-Mobile Internet" (GPRS).

I've just copied this technique after finding my O2 XDA Mini S sneakily using GPRS while connected to my WiFi network!

Something more elegant would be nice (like an extra button in connection manager) but this'll do nicely for now. So thanks for the tip. :)

Ahh, now that's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

I had to disconnect and reconnect the WiFi before the Work Connection could use it but all good now. Thanks.

Did I forget to mention I always ask for written permission before accessing any unprotected wireless networks??

Whats illegal? If its an open network you aren't breaking any laws by connecting to it?
