I just got myself an SPV C600 from Orange and have recently fouond my way to the forums here. I have been reading alot of stuff here and see that alot of people are flashing their ROM with the latest i-mate versions.

Basically I am wondering why would I want to upgrade my Orange ROM to the i-mate ROM. I have applied the two patches on the orange website that fix a couple of issues with Pocket IE and MMS messaging but have not seen any reason to upgrade.

Are there any functions that are locked down by Orange that are worth a look at?

Do the new ROMs contain any interesting features? (I did see that they contain "Push email")

Is there anywhere I can find out what the new ROMs contain or do I have to flash between all of the new ones to find one that I like?

new rom will support push email (at least the pre-rom that was published does)..

the reason people want to use the latest rom is because they are improved.. it's like running windows 2000 on your computer when you can be running windows xp... another reason may be to get rid of all the orange screens and "ads" and get a "clean" rom.

to get new roms you have to contact the store where you got your phone and ask if a rom upgrade is available.

Because the current roms are crippled of bugs and disfunctions that need to be solved.

Also because I hope new rom will have the bluetooth stack update, including A2DP profile and the like........

I personally don't care about push email, I'm not going to use it, ever.

Improved How?

Not sure I understand this one. New OS's are released for smartphones but the new i-mate ROM's are still running WM5 as far as I can tell.

I manually changed off of the orange homescreen etc so have no problems with branding.

I am more asking why you would cross flash your ROM, i.e. why flash an Orange SPV C600 with the i-mate ROM. Im pretty sure Orange wouldnt agree with me doing this.

Because the current roms are crippled of bugs and disfunctions that need to be solved.

Not sure which bug there are, I've not experienced any yet but I do appreciate that this would be a good reason to upgrade your ROM although surely Orange would release a ROM if the bugs were that bad.

Also because I hope new rom will have the bluetooth stack update, including A2DP profile and the like........

Things you get from updating your ROM (So Far...)

Bluetooth stack update - Stops the deveice crashing when you try to use 2 bluethooth devices at the same time? I have not experrienced this one yet but I do use TomTom and a bluetooth headset so this would be of interest if it does this.

A2DP Profile - Does this one allow stereo bluetooth headphones to work?

Push email - Allows immediate delivery of emails.

each manufacturer will release their own rom updates, so if i have a qtek and imate publishes a new rom i'm most likely gonna use it. normally they improve little bugs or add new things (you could maybe say they are more stable). they also update drivers as the bluetooth stack.

The W2000 and WXP comparation was just a bad example.. if microsoft brings out the WM5SE, then you will have to wait for the manufacturer of your phone to come out with a new rom that includes the microsoft update.. again, i would install whoever rom comes out first.

if you dont have problems with branding then just read at the changelogs when new roms are delivered. if you fins the updates could be usefull, then flash it. If not, just stick with the actual rom.

note that by flashing the phone you will most likely lose you warranty, so as you say orange does not agree on that ;)

it just depends on everyone.. i myself paid like 400 eur for this phone, so i want to get the maximum from it. if a new rom will improve it or add new features i will go for it.

My SP5m is failing to transfer object via bluetooth to many phones, including nokias, and some other phone cannot transfer objects to me (samsung ones).

So I consider this a bug.

Moreover sending files from the file manager often result in sharing violation errors, or in the device doing nothing when i select the target phone in the list.

as I've just said I couldn't care less of push email, mainly because the SP5m is a media-oriented device and not an office-oriented one... so I'd like more the stereo bluetooth than a useless (to me) push email feature that I'll never ever use...

Could you point me in the right direction to find the change notes for the different ROM updates. I did try the imate website but it seems I have to have an imate phone to see them.

Just to confirm thenext1, do you have Setttings / Beam set to 'Receive incoming' as well as bluetooth turned on AND the sending device added to devices list in Settings / Bluetooth? Because all of these are necessary on Windows Mobile to receive files from another device...

This is fairly normal for WindowsMobile. All the phones have struggled with file transfers since bluetooth was introduced on the e200.

The 'bug' you have described in an earlier post, and here, is a normal aspect of the windows operating system (XP, Win98, etc.). Programs have the ability to lock files that they are using to prevent other programs from intefering with them. This is not a bug but I can see you find it an annoyance

This patch corrects a problem with the Pocket Internet Explorer web browser that prevents the images to display correctly

OCH_browser_image_display_correction_ship.CAB

This patch corrects a problem with the MMS application. With this patch, you will be able to send MMS when the storage memory is around 1MB, when previously 4MB were required.

MMS_1MB_memory_limit_instead_of_4MB.cab

Receive incoming beams is ON.

Generally, when I receive a file from a device that's not already paired, sometimes it works, but sometimes the Add new device wizard "overtakes" the file progress dialog and the remote phone stops sending the file. So I think it's a bug in the process management because it works even without pairing it first.

In the samsung case however, the samsung was already paired, but when it tries to send a file it displays an error (in the samsung phone): "Unable to find services on I-mate SP5m"... so what? It's a pure software bug...

This is fairly normal for WindowsMobile. All the phones have struggled with file transfers since bluetooth was introduced on the e200.
no it ISN'T fairly normal... it's for me surprisingly anormal since Microsoft obviously CAN solve the bug but ... why they're reluctant??

And some SP3 owner confirmed me their device had no problem with BT.

This is one of the reason I was hoping the AKU 2.0 updated the bluetooth stack too (instead of only push email support).

Yes, but sending a file is a Read-Only task isn't it?

So WHY WMP locks the file denying even subsequent read permissions?

Let's say you're listening to a file in wmp and want to send it via bluetooth.

You SHOULD be able to send it while playing, for the reason described above.

But No, you must NOT ONLY stop playing the file in wmp, you need terminate WMP or open another file to let wmp release its "exclusive lock" on that file... why?

The scenario i've just described works on windows XP, so just why don't make it work on the phone? The underlying permission API is even the same .......

(Yeah I know now you'll argue that wm5 might not support permissions, or that bluetooth sucks and works that way by design and I should use infrared....)
