Apple store in the Trafford Centre? - haven't been yet but apparently it's nice and shiny. The cheap cables on ebay are just that - cheap and nasty

PM me for a solution ;-)

Nah, I'm scared of Apple stores since an unfortunate incident in the Soho branch in Noo Yoooork ('why I oughta....!' ' Yooo guyzzzzz'....) last May involving an iBook and some cawffeee and bagels...

I find the web support very useful, and on the rare occassion I have to ring and speak to their Indian call centre I find that forceful Jedi mindtricks do seem to work...eg from earlier today: ( yes, I type up transcripts from my shorthand notes...)

http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ibook/faq/

14" dual USB 'ice' iBook purchased feb 2002, exhibiting the common video ram / logic board problem. Now I could open it up, remove said corrupt 8mb video ram and reflow a new one onto the board for approx £20 and 2 hours work, but why should I? It's a known fault...

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Sajith: 'What is the nature of your problem today?'

Me: 'My iBook will not display a screen picture.'

Sajith: 'Have you tried shutting down the computer and restarting it?'

Me: 'Yes. And I have held down the reset key and cleared the PRAM. The units posts, but only displays a picture 1 in every 20 or so startup attempts. It is the logic board issue, and my seriel number is within the range of affected units.'

Sajith : 'I am so sorry sir, it is out of warranty'

Me: 'No it isn't. I was given it as a gift 4 years ago. Under UK law an item has to be fit for purpose and that includes working for a reasonable period after the expiry of the guarentee'

Sajith: 'But Apple have closed the extended replacement program sir in March 2005'

Me: 'Can I speak to someone in a UK call centre who understands UK consumer law?, it should be fixed free of charge, and if it isn't I will take Apple to court.'

Sajith: 'But it is 4 years old sir'

Me: 'And Apple have admitted there is a flaw by initiatiing a recall program that covers my unit, so regardless of the timeframe if I have to bring a case in court that the item is not fit for purpose I will win. It is a manufacturing flaw. An expensive computer should last longer than 3 - 4 years. This unit has not been repaired previously and Apple should have set aside resources to repair ALL affected units at least once under the terms of their repair extension. Can I speak to your supervisor?'

Sajith: 'I am so sorry sir. Please Hold'

.

.

Sajith: 'Sir, your repair reference number is XXXXXXXX, please drop your iBook into your nearest Apple authorised service centre at your earliest convenience, the repair will be carried out free of charge and will take approximatley 21 days'

Me: 'Thankyou very much. Goodbye'

Just a quick update, it seems my friend Sajeth DID try to pull a fast one, closing the case down the minute the call ended as 'resolved'.......

I found out when I tried to drop the iBook off in the Apple store in the Trafford ( don't know what possessed me to take it there rather than the agent in Leeds but glad I did despite the horros of the concierge / 'genius' bar system) and the case ID wasn't valid!!!!!!!!!!

Handed them a copy of my typed transcript and they went in the back for about 15 mins whilst I changed all the default settings on a range of macs in store, finally they came out and agreed to the repair 'as a goodwill gesture'......which has saved me £400 +vat for a new logic board and £75 + vat to fit it. So I asked about a new casing as it's got a finish similare to the ipod's plastic and I can have a new casing for £60 + vat parts and £75 + vat labour - I have to pay the labour despite them having it in bits anyway...oh well

Moral of the story is KEEP NOTES C.S REPS TELL LIES.

And use Apple's online C.S wherever you can...eg: booked a faulty ipod monday, box arrived for it tuesday, received in the Netherlands wednesday, replacement unit back here on thursday....
