Guest pjam001 Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I currently have a c500 but when my contract is up am seriously considering something along the lines of a Vario / MDA Compact II / M600. I don't really need the extra functionality, i'm just attracted to gadgets and like the idea of a touch / larger screen. (I've never been able to justify buying a seperate PDA but this could be a great combined device) Has anyone moved from a phone to a pda phone and regretted it due to ease of use or size etc. Thanks
Guest chrisbpr Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 i dont miss my c500 one bit , i have a vario & now wouldn't go back to a smartphone.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I would go back to maybe an Sp5 or C600 but at the moment it's the vario for me ;) Plus the excellent tmobile deal ;)
Guest Samsonite Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 ... regretted it due to ease of use or size etc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> size matters!! i went from a E200 to a Magician so the size wasnt that much of a leap but the c500 is loads more compact than the older E200 so you will have a relatively larger device no matter what you went for... My wife cant use my Qtek as a phone, her hands are too small and its a pain for her to hold the phone to her ear for any length of time. In the same vein, if you want a discrete device, a phone will always be a better option that a PPC toy... but what a toy!! bigger screen for movies, handwriting recognition and more product options sporting built in WiFi - fast becoming an essentail requirment... If you are unconvinced, check out the SP5 or SP5m - still a candy bar phone form factor but all the latest spec including WiFi... If i had an unlimited choice, thats where i'd go - i could do with a more subtle device and a phone that looks like a phone is appealing to me right now. Dont get me wrong, i really rate the Magician but i cant afford to upgrade the i apps have to go to WM5 - mainly SatNav... ;)
Guest pjam001 Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 The T-Mobile deals do seem excellent at the moment. For normal use I wondered whether to not bother with the keyboard on the vario and keep the device a little thinner, the gadget side of me however says "Hmmmm, Keyboard", in a Homer Simpson manner. I need to keep the cost down so will need to stick to something I can get cheap on contract, I guess that rules out the SP5m. I suppose, being honest, I would really like to get one of the pda phones. I just have a habbit of buying shiny things with flashy lights only to find I made the wrong choice, apart from the C500 that is. Thanks for the replys so far.
Guest DJ Big D Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I luuuuurve my Vario now. Human Traffic & AVP downloaded to my MiniSD. I'm a happy bunny!
Guest shadamehr Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 Right you Vario owners - nice to see that includes you too Ash, as I can pick your brains too now. Cos I just entered the fold today with a Vario. I have some frustrating but no doubt easy questions though, if you can help... 1 - How do I get the Text Messaging application, ot add new t9 words - I'm totally lost on this one... 2 - How do I get it to let me assign an mp3 or wma sound file as a TEXT MESSAGE tone. In my list, it's like a crappy Samsung phone in that it only seems to show INTERNAL coded tunes for Text Message tones, whilst showing ALL my sound files for Ringtones. I am nearly sure my XDA2 from years of old, could od this - indeed I swear I did - I copied my usual ringtone over and set it. So where am I going wrong here? On a more genereal note, and maybe this forum is not the place to ask, so curtail my post and others if so Ash, but where are people getting things like an O2 settings cab file for it? Cos I know going down the entire ROM install route is an easy way around this, but I would rather do it a more legal way...? Cheers for any help folks!

Now some wav files dont work but i kno a definate wav type that works which is ACM Waveform. If you need any converting or any more help grab me on [email protected] & i'd be more than happy ;)

Any ideas as to any of the other things I floated? Cheers for the help mate ta!
Guest jimbouk Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 As an ex c500 and m500 owner and now a Jamin user, the only thing I miss from the c500 is the phone keypad - that allowed me to compose texts/emails without looking at the screen. Otherwise as previous posters have said, the formfactor of the pda's gives you so much more in a singly gadget.

Otherwise as previous posters have said, the formfactor of the pda's gives you so much more in a singly gadget. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It MIGHT - if I can ever get wi-fi to work. Let me explain though, as it's clearly an issue with the vario... AS it was out the box, on T-Mobile ROM, I couldn't get it to connect to my home network. No reason given - it just kept saying can't connect - even though it saw it, signal strength was solid, and key was correct. Let me quantify that my wireless router is a Belkin pre-m, with huge range, fast speed, b AND g compatible, without a b connection reducing the speed down for all devices etc. And my pc's, laptop, psp, and two 802.11b i-mate sp5's can connect to it fine! Not so the vario though - so something amiss there. I therefore installed the 802.11g patch on the t-mobile rom, and it connected fine thereafter (even though .11b should have worked with my network anyhow). Last night I installed the new i-mate rom on it, and again, no connection... Even with the patch on as well this time. The only device I have ever owned, from a shed load, that won't connect to my WIDE STANDARDS network... Doh. And I am STILL to find out how you add new words to the t9 dictionary - surely SOMEONE must know? It's not going well so far, my move to PDA from SmartPhone again...
