Forcing homescreen back, howto?

Some time ago I started a game I had just downloaded (Explode Arena) and hit the home key by error, and the game instantly froze with no possibility of resume.

Yesterday I launched Isotope244's Atomic Cannon and, always by error, I got into the About screen.. there was no way back..

(probably due to a bug in the game).

I was locked there and the homescreen wouldn't appear pressing End and Home buttons...

In each case holding the power button makes the phone suddenly shut down, but not immediately, after about 2 minutes!!!

Is there a way to force killing aan application? Or at least to pause it and regain control of the homescreen?

Symbian devices can do this while on every program.
