Guest danielf Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Hi, Due to the fact that it is for the moment impossible to make a backup in WM5 for smartphone, I was thinking about the following idea: 1) Copying all the storage of the smartphone to a SD card 2) Exporting the registry ( with a program like Resco Registry) also to the SD card The only problem that remains is that you can't copy the internal databases , like the PIM database. But this can easily be synchronized with Outlook. In case of a hard rset, you can copy the data from the SD to the smartphone and importing the registry. Any suggestions if this "backup"is reliable? Daniel
Guest Tech Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 you wont be able to copy the contents of the phone memory/storage to miniSD as there are files which will be in use or deny the access to be copied. And also how are you meant to restore everything back to the original state? there was a reason for not being able to do a backup really in WM5 as it has its own backup feature or some memory persistant thing - cant remember or think of the words but awarner[mvp] did say something like this on one of the thread a while ago and it is true ;) see if i can ask my colleagues on what it was called..... ;) the only thing you really need to backup are just the following: your installed programs my documents folder themes ringtones mp3's contacts/calanders/tasks which are done in outlook via activesync and thats it - the rest is just the OS and its files..... really there isnt much to backup. if you dont want to install the applications again - just install them to the miniSD card (if possible) and then just run it from there - thats what I do but ive never had to hard reset my device :(
Guest danielf Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 Hi Tech, You are right but the only reason of a backup is in case you have installed some application - for example in the startup directory or a plugin on your homescreen- and you are not more able to start your device. An other reason of a hard reset could be when after having installed and uninstalled some applications, your smartphone becomes very unstable. The only solution is then a hard reset. ( I had already this bad experience with my PocketPc but I had a backup) Daniel
