Playing MP3s on the Wizard across a wifi connectio

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Wizard (XDA Mini S is what I'm getting) as a music player to stream music direct from my home wireless network either by

1. Connecting to a music server such as TwonkyVision or Windows Media Connect or

2. The simpler option of just playing an MP3 file directly from a shared network folder.

I've got about 80Gb of music sitting on my home server, and it'd be nice to be able to use the XDA Mini as a 'wireless ipod'.

Ive got this set up on my blue angel and universal, i use PocketLAN which allows you to view the shared folders on the network, then just open them up through Windows Media Player.

It works a dream for me,

I had some success doing this using Edna on my W2k Server

It needs python on the desktop/server and a MP3 player that can handle Playlists properly as Media Player doesn't work but TCPMP does.

That looks very cool. The advantage being that with my machine at home serving MP3s via HTTP across the internet, I could effectively stream my music collection to the phone wherever I have a wifi connection (so, for example, I could play choons directly to my XDA from my machine at home, without having to copy them onto an SD card).

I guess it would even work across GPRS, depending on the bitrate of the track, but it'd be cheaper to listen to the radio. 8)

TCPMP and the default File Explorer are able to view shared folders, simply by typing "\\" in the address bar of either application.

i have only used that ORB network thing for streaming. AFAIK its only over the net tho. works good anyway.

how does the file explorer / tcpmp thing work??

I'm connected to my netgear router (as is my laptop "acer"). I go into tcpmp, open file, type \\acer and it shows as an empty directory. There is music in there and I have no filters set in tcpmp.

Am I doing something wrong or does anyone have any ideas why it's not working?

In file explorer it just tries to connect via gprs even tho I'm connected via wifi!

Solved it, File explorer didn't work.

I had to enable the guest account on XP n then I used total commander... job done! Thanks for the tip!

Make sure you have your wifi set to best performance! ;)

I've been playing with Twonkey and UPNP. The only program I can get to work properly as a UPNP player is Nero Showtime Mobile.

But it does work really well. The only problem I've had so far is streaming videos and speed.

But I have a collection of 25k MP3 files and Twonky works very well do this.

That's good to know - I use Twonky at home (with my MP101 a similar number of MP3s) and it'd be handy to be able to play stuff across the LAN from the same server.

hi all, i have installed PocketLAN and it picks up my shared folders fine but when i try to load an MP3 i get "the parameter is incorrect" ;)

Does anyone know what this message means? Ive tried on a number of mp3's and it does the same thing

Is that message from WMP? It (rather stupidly IMO) can't understand or play tunes from network shares.

im running windows media player 10 on my xda mini s, are you sure it cant be done cause Chuckles seems to have gotten it working unless ive read it wrong <_<

I personally do not use PocketLAN to hear my MP3s. Here's how I proceed:

I launch TCPMP (a great free media player). From there, I do "File open", then I enter the path to my shared folder. Then I select which song(s) I want to hear, and press ok. That's it, works great!

BTW, I was unable to do the same with Windows Media Player on my Wizard.

yup after some more trying i realised that windows media player didnt allow this :P O well TCPMP does the job ;)
