Some Noobie questions

Hiya,

I have had my MDA VARIO for over a week now and my previous phone was a Symbian UIQ Motorola A1000 on the three network.

I have been visiting a few forums and trying to brush up on my knowledge of the phone and WM5.

Some niggles that I want ot try and sort out are, have soft reset my phone on lots of occasions:

1. My alarm keeps going of 6:45 every morning, even though there are no reminders or alarms set.

2. I have a Netgear router and can only connect to it roughly 1 in 10 attempts. The router is running in Auto 108 mbps mode and I use WPA-PSK. I have tryed the registry edit to enable wifi g mode on the Vario.

3. My mini-sd card pops out evry now and then when I take the phone out of my pocket. I'm worried that I may loose it. Is there any way to secure it?

4. Can you tab through the various programs that you have running. If I check my messages and IE running, is there an easy way to toggle through the programs, rather than using the menu to re-select them. In the case of IE it starts the Favorites screen evrytime.

Sorry for the questions, but I have looked and not been able to suss the above out.

Regards

Vince

Hiya,

I have had my MDA VARIO for over a week now and my previous phone was a Symbian UIQ Motorola A1000 on the three network.

I had exactly the same phone before I moved to the Vario. The Vario can do much more than the A1000 which 3 never really supported properly. Also you'll find t-mobile much better than 3 generally.

1. My alarm keeps going of 6:45 every morning, even though there are no reminders or alarms set.

There have been reports of alarms behaving slightly oddly. Check you're running the latest ROM version.

2. I have a Netgear router and can only connect to it roughly 1 in 10 attempts. The router is running in Auto 108 mbps mode and I use WPA-PSK. I have tryed the registry edit to enable wifi g mode on the Vario.

I have a g mode access point and have no problems connecting, I use WEP security and that's fine. It could be the attempts to auto negotiate at the software compressed speed are upsetting the vario. Firstly I'd try disabling the security and see if the connection's ok. If it's just a domestic access point a combination of WEP and mac address connection control is nice and secure.

3. My mini-sd card pops out evry now and then when I take the phone out of my pocket. I'm worried that I may loose it. Is there any way to secure it?

Get a case. I've got mine in the Krusell case (forget the model) with a fold over flap so the card slot is protected.

4. Can you tab through the various programs that you have running. If I check my messages and IE running, is there an easy way to toggle through the programs, rather than using the menu to re-select them. In the case of IE it starts the Favorites screen evrytime.

SPB Pocket Plus will allow you to do this. It gives you win3.1 style menus on the close icon. It also adds a few other things that WM5 is missing. Makes it easy to add stuff to the today screen etc. I quite like it.

Personally I use MagicButton as my task manager. It creates a task bar on the top bar on the Vario and includes options to control the action of the OK button. Best of all it's free. Get it here.

Wisbar also gives useful task manager functions... however the latest version is causing my vario to lock up when it comes out of standby, so i'm still trying to fix this.

with regards to the crashing, i've found my vario behaves oddly after active sync has been probing it. It has a tendency to go really slow and wont sort itself out until i perform a soft reset. I'm using the latest t-mobile rom which mysteriously vanished recently.

connecting to a wireless network. G mode is disabled by default on the t-mobile rom. It can be re-enabled with a small reg hack. I'm sure i got the hack from modaco. Maybe this will improve your connection?
