The vario does not have 3G - it does have EDGE, but I'm not sure if the UK network supports it.

Speed wise, I find mine a bit slow but quick enought to be useful, especially if you turn off pictures - this will save you a great deal of money as well.

Tmob supposedly do have an EDGE network, not sure how great the coverage is. It seems (on Orange at least) that its only used to cover areas that have patchy 3G, not a fantastic method!

Can anyone confirm that they use EDGE on T-mobile?? Thinking of changing to t-mobile but really want fast browsing speeds!!

No UK mobile network has extensive EGDE coverage. AFAIK, only Orange and T-Mobile have any coverage, and this isn't general - only in a few locations. I understand they're expanding them, but my advice is to assume that you'll never get EDGE this year, and if you happen to come across a real live EGDE connection, just be pleased. ;)

is there anyway of checking where the coverage is??

are we talking UK or US?

i have a TMobile US MDA, and the icon says "E", not "G", indicating it is using the EDGE network.

i have seen speeds around 89kbps with dslreports.com mobile speed test.

browsing speed is OK. i have never turned off pictures tho, that would probably make a hell of a difference. truth is, i can barely tell a speed difference when i am connected to the net via USB with the thing.

Would be nice to know if Tmob has an Edge network - to be honest I hadn't realised they had a 3G network! shows how much I keep up lol

T-Mobile UK certainly has an EDGE network - however, I've never seen it. ;) Just assume that they don't, but will have in the future. If you're lucky enough to ever find an EGDE cell, then count yourself lucky. I understand though, it's similar with Orange too - neither network has an extensive EGDE network. In fact, it's probably better to say T-Mobile and Orange have an extensive non-EDGE network with a few patches of EDGE in places. ;)

Is it likely they will have EDGE coverage in urban areas such as parts of London?

Central London - never seen an Edge network!

just a note:

with the US MDA's, you have to change a registry setting to get the MDA to show an E icon (for EDGE) instead of always showing the G icon (for GPRS).

- navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\

- Create a new DWord EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon and assign it a value of 1

- Perform a soft reset

Thats odd.. I have a UK unit..

However my ICON here in the states has always said 'G'..

No my friend who has the CINGULAR version which is physically different in relation to looks of the MDA.. His icon says 'E'

Neither Orange nor 02 provide EDGE support.

TMobile has full EDGE support in Germany & is supposed to be limited trialing it in England.
