Guest Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Hi All As the title says, I'm thinking of going the PPC route. At the min I have a SP5 and it is great but there are a few short comings that I think PPC would fill (please correct me if I'm wrong) I'm in Ireland so can't get to see any of the devices I'm interested in (our mobile operators are useless even though we have voda and O2, they haven't got a clue!) My big concern is size so I'm thinking of the imate Jamin but is that small enough compared to say the sp5 or c500? More to the point is it much bigger heavier? I do txt a bit but also write a fair few emails, how is PPC for that (assume I won't be walking around when writing them) I HATE covers, I would have the device in a pocket with nothing else, will the screen be ok or will dust be an issue with this? Does it look big and stupid when held up to your ear when on a call? Now the things I'm hoping it can do the SP can't I know its only QVGA too so how much better/ easier is working with documents and excel sheets? Can you get basic network utilities for it (ping, tracert etc?) Is terminal service client useable? Does the browser support frames? or if you click on a link to say a zip file will it let you download it or just say the device does not support this file? sorry for the long post but as I can't see the device face to face I'm relying on you guys. Also if you have any strong for or against moving to PPC please share! thanks again gerryR

Guest James Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 its not that bad ;) the fact I was in the kebab house had more to do with it ;) there is a free app for Plus members called MyIP that pings and stuff.... I don't have a case and its fine with dust... so far! it does not look stupid as a phone.. mda compact II is one of the smallest! screen is excellent, word and excell is good to use..

Think I'll do a little bit more research on it and maybe order it on Mon unless I find some bad stuff on it. 2 thing that worry me a bit is the processor and the 64MB of RAM. If they released a JAM with 128MB they really should have put the same in this. Ahh well! Hope the kebab was good ;) thanks for the info atb gerryR
Guest Tallyman Posted March 19, 2006 Report Posted March 19, 2006 I'd suggest the MDA vario - has an excellent slide-out QWERTY keyboard & the screen auto adapts to landscape when you use it. It's obviously bigger than a phone but it doesn't look too silly when you're using it & it's got a nice solid metal feel - no case required but screen protectors are a necessity. Brilliant WiFi & uses Windows mobile 5.0 - Excel & Word are cut-down versions without a lot of the formatting facilities but both good enough for general use. Explorer utilises frames but adapts the screen to fit as much as possible to minimize scrolling - this causes some compromises with frames & layout. There's no command prompt so you cannot ping etc. (though you can probably get a utility which does this) TSC is there but no idea how usable it is. Also has Bluetooth (paired easily to laptop & headset); 1.3mP camera; uses miniSD cards (bit fussy, needs branded but takes 1gig Kingston OK); etc. etc. - do a google for ful reviews. Only complaints are the sound quality on calls which is a bit disappointing though fine through the included headphones & my bluetooth headset (Music quality through the headphones is excellent), and there's no cradle or memory card included.
Guest Posted March 20, 2006 Report Posted March 20, 2006 cheers for the reply Tallyman! the thing that got me looking at the jamin was the size, I really wouldn't consider anything any bigger than it (if I could get anything smaller than it that would be cool too) I reckon alot of your comments could apply to the jamin too (at least I hope they do as they all seem fairly positive!!) I've ordered my prophet yesterday, I'll be sure to post my 1st impressions. thanks again gerryR
