Key lock and backlight on C600

I have been searching and searching for a solution to this but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

On my SMT5600, when the keypad was locked, the screen backlight would only come on when you pressed the left softkey. But on my new C600, when I lock the keypad, whentever I hit ANY key, the backlight on the screen comes on. This causes massive battery drain, especially when the phone is in my pocket (screen is almost always on!) or in my leather holster. Is there a fix to prevent the screen (and backlight) from lighting up whenever any key (or joystick) is pressed? This seems to be a major flaw, and I hope it is fixable through registry hacking...
