The simplest/safest way to

I'm sorry, but I have been browsing to find a way to know if I am on GPRS or EDGE (or Wlan). There seems to be so many different solutions, mostly requesting that you tweak the registry, which is OK, but I would like to know what is the best way to do this.

(A small app to show connection transfer speed would actually be even better... please advise if you know one...)

im unsure but usually it depends if your phone supports it? as well as this it should automatically show the E or G icon depending on the connection - there are registry tweaks but really best not to (in the long term) modify it and let the device/network operator take care of it ;)
