Is there a quick way of pulling down the start menu using any key combinations without having to tap the screen or slide the keyboard out and press the windows key??

I know is only a minor thing but its really been bugging me recently ;)

I use a program I downloaded from the XDA Developers forum that assigns a long press of the left soft key to Start and a long press of the right soft key to OK. It works great.

Oooh, sounds good. Do you have a link?

Are there any other 'must-have' apps/tweaks for the Wizard which people should be aware of (I just ordered my XDA Mini S, due to arrive on Wednesday...)

It's against the forum rules to provide a link. Sorry ;)

:?:

Ok, rules are rules .... Could you offer the name of the utility or suggest ;) and set of keywords I can use to search for it?

Eh? Which rule? Surely if it's a free app from xda-developers then it can't be breaking any rules?

As said before, though, just the app name would let us google for it...

I found it.

For those who are also looking for the utility go over to XDA Forums and in the HTC wizard forum look up "Remap Softkey and volume button"

Yeah, or 'smartskey'.

Out of interest, can somebody point me at the rule mentioned above so I know what I can/can't post - I'm slightly confused, as I've seen x-links elsewhere on Modaco to threads on other forums and to other software, so I'm not sure what the difference is with this particular link? Thanks.

Last time I checked there was a rule that stated you couldn't post links to other forums. I've seen other posts edited for this in the past. That's why I didn't post a link. I must admit finding it a slightly strange rule.

Best bet is to paste the URL but replace WWW. with cheese. and then explain that.

then its not a link, just a puzzle ;)

I have tried smart keys - the above mentioned program from xda and it messed up the volume control a bit so i could not select vibrate and sound off - also v difficult to uninstall - nigh on impossible without hard reset as it sets up notification queues. better do what i do and map start menu to button 5 using settings/buttons

cheers

you may like vito's "buttonmapper". it is not freeware/shareware but can assign quick-press and long-press to both softkeys and has a true kill-program "x" applet included. i bought it and used it until i started using water's "smartskey" from xda-developers. i have no issues with it and have upgraded with every enhancement release. very light and transformed my wiza100 allowing access to start (left-soft long press) and stop/kill "x" program (right-soft long press). it also does other little cool things. read the complete post to follow the development.

If you click Start then Settings, on the "Personal" tab, select "Buttons". You can then reassign the various hardware buttons to other functions or launch applications.

On my MDA Vario I've reassigned button 1 (messaging) to the start menu and button 2 (internet) to OK/Close.

You can still access messaging and internet from the start menu anyway so you don't lose any functionality. This sort of makes the top two hardware buttons mirror the way the bottom two hardware buttons work by replicating the "soft" buttons on the screen. To my mind these buttons work best like this - the OK/Close button is particularly useful and you can use the handset more extensively without the stylus or the keyboard.

All well and good, but its dammed near impossible to press the buttons above the screen when you have been using the buttons under the screen without risking dropping the phone when you are using one hand. I really wish there was a utility built into the phone to allow you to change these...

Ive been to the XDA forum stated above, but all I can seem to see is text... no link to any downloads....

Any ideas?

You need to be logged into xda forums to see the download links.

I use the app from there and it works a treat for me (especially the latest version which gives more options for how the volume rocker behaves in certain apps).

The only thing is I couldn't get it to work properly when installed to the storage card - I would get intermittent error messages... No problems since I moved it to the device though.
