Find built-in home screen? or convert hif?

I'd like to start simple by modifying the XML for my phone's existing home screen. But where do I find it? There's only the hif file in the Home directory, which I understand is a binary cache of the current home page. Probably the XML version of the built-in home page is in ROM somewhere, but how can I get it? Or is there some way to "decompile" the hif?
